As has been the case for a number of years now, my AP class is 80 percent female at a vocational school in MA where the school population skews heavily male. (we also have academic instruction only every other week). The young women in my class, and many of the young men, found that the characters in this novel really resonated with their relatively poor and rural upbringings. Franklin County is the most rural county in Massachusetts, and with that come the small insular views often found in small towns, as well as the silent scourge of substance abuse, addiction, and abuse.\r\n\r\nAs we began our reading of the novel, I was mostly focused on characterization as this is always my first objective of the year- analyzing and exploring how an author creates rich and believable characters and a compelling setting. We begin by reviewing or learning the basic literary elements of diction, imagery, language, syntax, and structure. Students quickly used these elements to help to build from literal summary into something approaching true analysis as they found they had much to say about the Kinzler family and many quickly aligned behind one or the other character, though these alligences could shift.\r\n\r\nThe greatest impact that I saw in the classroom (and one that I could not forsee as I do not often read novels thinking about \"What is the theme?\" in the way we ask of students- was the discussion we had around generational trauma, healing from it, and how it ripples out long after the original trauma, affecting members of the family generations removed. This conversation through discussion but especially through informal and formal writing on the novel- was one of the richest I have had in years. I expected most students to be focused on the father in the novel seemingly developing a gay relationship later in life- or his eventual death, and we did discuss the motivations and factors around these- but everything came back to the way that trauma within the family is passed down through the generations, limiting a character's ability to truly know themselves or act in their best interests. I think that this, and the idea of needing help from others to heal- that letting people in can help to make a person whole- were themes that truly resonated with my student population.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this text a reality for myself and my students. It is rare that we read new fiction- and even rarer still to have hardbound copies of novels.
