After the success of our original project, students wanted to continue—but with softer, more comfortable materials. They discovered they preferred polyester yarn over acrylic, and your generosity made it possible for us to bring in a wide selection of textures, along with additional crochet and knitting tools so more students could join in.\r\n\r\nFrom the moment the new supplies arrived, students were eager to dive back in. The room often buzzes with conversation, laughter, and quiet focus as they work and help each other learn stitches, fix mistakes, and explore their creativity. While no one has finished a full project just yet, what's been most powerful is their persistence and excitement. Many have asked if they can take their projects home or continue next year, even as our school year wraps up. That eagerness says everything about the impact this has had.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our students have gained more than materials! Furthermore, they've gained patience, confidence, and a meaningful way to express themselves. We're looking forward to seeing their projects completed, whether it's over the summer or next school year, and to continuing this unique and powerful SEL journey you helped make possible.","fullyFundedDate":1742047048380,"projectUrl":"project/threads-of-connection-strengthening-sel/9095393/","projectTitle":"Threads of Connection: Strengthening SEL Through Knitting/Crocheting and More Yarn","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. V","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9739193_orig.png?crop=350,350,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725978499291","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9739193"},{"teacherId":9739193,"projectId":9001772,"letterContent":"Although no one has completed their projects yet, students are deeply engaged in creating scarves, blankets, and ponchos. They have found that polyester yarn is easier to work with compared to acrylic, which requires more patience, hand-eye coordination, and skill with the tools. Given that we live in New England, where the weather is always unpredictable, they are especially excited to finish their projects and put them to good use. Many students have taken great pride in their work and want to continue at every opportunity. They constantly ask when they can work on their creations—even when they know that Wednesday is our designated SEL Knitting and Crochet Group day. Their enthusiasm has been so inspiring that I've added extra time and sessions whenever permitted by teachers.\r\n\r\nThe impact of this project has been truly transformative. Thanks to your generous contributions, our SEL Knitting and Crochet Group has flourished into a space of creativity, connection, and emotional growth. When students first saw the new materials, their excitement was undeniable. They eagerly sifted through the vibrant polyester yarn, selecting colors for their projects and sharing ideas. For many, this was their first experience working with high-quality materials, making it easier for them to focus on learning new techniques rather than struggling with difficult textures. Since receiving these resources, students are in the process of creating scarves, blankets, and ponchos, with some eager to take on more intricate projects like stuffed animals. A few students, initially unsure of their abilities, have made remarkable progress—one diligently working on a blanket and another on a poncho—both sharing how knitting has helped them manage stress. Another student expressed that the rhythmic motion of knitting brings a sense of calm during challenging school days.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to introduce more complex patterns and collaborative projects, such as a community quilt or blankets for local shelters. This will strengthen their skills while fostering teamwork and perseverance. Your support has provided more than just materials—it has given our students a therapeutic outlet, a sense of belonging, and the confidence to create.
