What was once a room primarily used for clinical check-ups and temperature readings has evolved into a vital restorative space where students can nourish both their bodies and their minds.\r\n\r\nThe impact of this project can be seen in the daily shift in student behavior and recovery. \r\n\r\nFor many students, the \"medical\" nature of a health office can be intimidating. The presence of calming books and the simple joy of birdwatching have helped to make this a calming space, making students more receptive to care and rest.\r\n\r\nBy providing age-appropriate books on nutrition and health conditions, we have shifted the narrative from \"What is wrong with me?\" to \"How does my body work?\" Students are leaving the office with a greater sense of agency over their own health.\r\n\r\nWe have seen improvement in emotional regulation and students love the new space. The sensory tools and \"wellness window\" have provided a necessary bridge for students experiencing overstimulation. Students who utilize the calming tools are able to return to the classroom often times with no other intervention.\r\n\r\nOur students feel a sense of belonging. Our inclusive library has sent a clear message: You are seen. Whether a student is managing a chronic condition or a difficult emotional day, they find stories that mirror their experiences, reducing the feeling of isolation that often accompanies health challenges.\r\n\r\nOur goal was to create a space that nurtures the \"whole child.\" By integrating literacy and nature into our health protocols, we aren't just treating symptoms; we are supporting the student's identity. Students can return to their desks not just physically recovered, but emotionally recharged and confident.\r\nWe are deeply grateful for the support that has allowed the Health Office to become a cornerstone of student well-being.","fullyFundedDate":1763588858488,"projectUrl":"project/the-wellness-window/9895686/","projectTitle":"The Wellness Window","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Nurse Kim","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10350550"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_59596","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":395,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":10,"percentAsian":16,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":65,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":59596,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Merriam Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Merriam Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/acton-boxborough-regional-school-district/merriam-elementary-school/59596"}
