We have been starting our kindergarten year learning how to be good listeners and use or body to help us learn. We made a potato head craft to show how each part of our body helps us listen in class. The students were able to choose their own colorful paper to display their listening potato. I was able to laminate the projects after they were completed to protect them for hallway display. Now our class has a wonderful craft hangin in the hallway to show what we are learning. Since they are laminated, we are going to keep these projects in our calm corner for students to reflect on when they are having a hard day. At the end of the year, my students will have a wonderful keepsake from the start of school that they can take home. \r\nI am already planning our next colorful project that will connect to our learning about the 5 senses. We spent 6 club sessions working on decorating our rocks for the garden. We talked about images and colors that would be uplifting and happy to see. We choose hearts, the sun and moon, smiles, and rainbows. We also made some rocks with images that we really like, including food, games, and colors. Our final day of decorating included motivating words and phrases or affirmations. The popular words were 'choose kind' and 'You are awesome'. All together we have over 300 rocks ready for the garden.\r\n\r\nWe had 2 days of bracelet making. Our use of the positive words and affirmations came in handy as we put these words in the middle of the bracelets. We created 30 bracelets so far. We will make them for one more day before hiding them in the hallways!\r\n\r\nWe were not able to lay the rocks outside due to some major thunderstorms. We will be creating the rock garden at the base of a tree out front of our school. I read books about Kindness, compassion for others, and how to help others feel happy and welcome. Students were able to spread Kindness in our school by making Valentine's Day pictures and hiding them around other classrooms. \r\nAfter discussing the premise of nursing homes, the students created get well cards and Valentine's Day themed placemats for the residents. \r\nThe club wanted to give the teachers a gift as a way to say thank you for teaching us. \r\nWe created some little sayings that we wrapped around the pens. We then placed one on each staff mailbox. To spread Kindness around the school the students drew pictures of ways they have been kind and compassionate in the last few weeks. We then turned our pictures into large letters to build a wall display for kindness. This project was the most exciting for the students. They are able to witness others feeling happy when they see the display. This gave the students a great sense of pride and success. I will have a new group of students in my club for the next few weeks. We plan on starting with a spring time craft that can be sent over to the nursing home residence. We still have the kind rocks to decorate and the socks to donate. As you can see this club is reaching many students and our community. We are really excited to have our books in an organized shelf. The students are able to sit down at the shelf and look at all of the different books we have in our classroom. Students are able to easily find books and return them on the correct shelf with the sticker labels. Everything is easily accessible for my kindergarten students. Seeing them talk about books with others shows they are going to love to read. By the end of the school year they will be able to find words they can read in these books. This is such a wonderful addition to our classroom. We are able to organize the supplies based on different skills we are working on. My students know where the letter cards and picture cards are for helping them blend to read. I have a drawer for handwriting paper and letter formations. My class is really working hard on blending sounds to read and enjoy using these materials each day. I am so grateful for the donations that funded this project so we can have our materials easily available each day.\r\nThe second cart is for math materials. This cart holds papers to help write numbers, a drawer for puzzles, and even a place for the white board markers. The students are happy to reach the materials without asking for assistance. I am happy that my students are building independence and responsibility. I have really enjoyed seeing my students learn about their big feelings and how to express them appropriately in school. We learned about our class being a family and caring for each other. We read our new story 'The Magical Yet' and discussed how it is okay to not know something YET. We made our own yet characters that hang in our classroom to help us try new and tricky things. Our breathing bear has been a great tool for those times that the class is just a bit too excited or emotions are running high, we can slow ourselves down with deep breaths.
