My percussion students were thrilled to have access to so many more instruments, and we used many of them in our concert and assessment music this year. They learned so much, and our high school teacher is eagerly awaiting the arrival of three of my rising freshmen knowing how many skills they picked up. Next fall I will have five percussionists in one band, so knowing we have auxiliary instruments is lessening my stress of making sure they each have meaningful parts and instruments to play. It was also such an organizational help having the cymbal bag for our off campus performance this year; we were able to pack \"cymbal only\" items in there appropriately, and it helped keep track of our items in transit.\r\n\r\nThe additional tuners and contact microphones have been a game changer for orchestra. I am currently taking a graduate class in which I have been inspired to continue making intonation and tuning a focus in band as well. The extra devices will be a great help there.\r\n\r\nI think the Most Valuable Player from this project has to be the wood block though. Not only has it been a good addition in my percussion sections, but I have also frequently used it to help keep time during rehearsal when the group is outplaying the metronome on my speakers. Students notice the difference and improvement when I pull it out, and it has really helped us so much this year.","fullyFundedDate":1752586530162,"projectUrl":"project/shake-rattle-and-roll-into-bobcat-nati/9459499/","projectTitle":"Shake, Rattle, and Roll into Bobcat Nation!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ward","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9695350_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724544084656","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9695350"},{"teacherId":9743931,"projectId":9203700,"letterContent":"Helping ELD students build stronger sentences strengthens their ability to clearly express ideas in speaking and writing across all content areas. Our cleaning wipes have helped us maintain a clean, sanitary learning environment, the chess set and book have helped me build stronger relationships with my students, and the chart papers have helped students develop posters about classroom norms and American history.\r\n\r\nAs you probably recall from your time in grade school, students like to draw on desks. But students also like a clean learning environment - it's funny how that works! - so when I brought out the stack of cleaning wipes that you all provided us, they were thrilled to have the chance to clean. See the before and after photos!\r\n\r\nThe chess set has created opportunities to build rapport with my students. What many folks don't realize is how important relationships are to managing a classroom. Positive, friendly connections help build a culture of respect and learning, which in turns improves student outcomes. Something as simple as a chess set helps set the stage to chat with students and share a common interest. Right now the chess book is checked out by a student wanting to learn! We have a match scheduled for next week.\r\n\r\nThe posters helped us create our classroom norms at the start of the year (\"don't spray stuff plz\"). The posters continue to support students' learning with opportunities to demonstrate their learning visually and collectively.\r\n\r\nThank you for your support. The new texts have allowed us to explore skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, analyzing characters, and connecting texts to our own lives. Beyond comprehension, the books also support vocabulary development and fluency, giving students more confidence in both their reading and speaking.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active and collaborative experience. Students read independently, in pairs, and in small groups, discussing what they notice and asking each other questions. These conversations have deepened their understanding of the stories and encouraged them to see reading as a way to build community. The excitement around our book discussions is contagious, and it's wonderful to watch students support each other as they grow as readers.\r\n\r\nOne of my students, who used to shy away from reading, now carries a novel from our new collection everywhere she goes—she even asked if she could borrow it over the weekend. Another student proudly shared that for the first time, he finished an entire book on his own. These small but powerful moments show how your contribution has turned reading into something joyful and meaningful for our learners.","fullyFundedDate":1744222203549,"projectUrl":"project/bridging-the-language-gap-dari-english/9203776/","projectTitle":"Bridging the Language Gap: Dari-English Learning Materials for my students","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Art","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9743931_orig.png?crop=790,791,x0,y50&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734272953850","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9743931"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_132410","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1097,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":92,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.0,"schoolId":132410,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sonia Sotomayor Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sonia Sotomayor Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/prince-george-s-county-public-schools/sonia-sotomayor-middle-school/132410"}
