Not only can bass players play standing up, but they can also play sitting down (on a stool). There is a specific way to sit on the stool, but it allows the student to play for longer periods without fatigue. \r\n\r\nThey are also great because they are adjustable. Each new school year, students are fitted for a bass and a stool. The band program had many beginners last year, and the reeds and spray came in handy last year. \r\n\r\nI have all the beginners fill out a form with their top three choice instruments that they would like to play with some other information. Once they do that, I have them play test each mouthpiece (even the ones that they didn't pick). \r\n\r\nThey may surprise themselves, whereas they may have picked a clarinet, but cannot get a sound out of the mouthpiece/barrel. After counseling the students, I gave them squishy toys that continued to help them feel less anxious, stressed, worried, scared, and nervous. They were extremely grateful and excited to see the various squishes that they could choose from. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, because of the amazing donations from the Donors, I was able to encourage the students with positive message pencils and help them develop a growth mindset when they received the affirmation and uplifting stickers. If we are headed on a band trip, we always want to have extra reeds. It's always nice to have extra reeds on hand so that students can keep playing. \r\n\r\nI am a brass player myself and have tested the market with the various valve oils for brass instruments and Al Cass is some of the best. Most brass instruments that are rented either come with store brand generic oil or none at all. Students need oil to keep their instruments in working condition. The pencils and mirrors are two items in our room that will always be put to use. \r\n\r\nThere is nothing like a new sharpened pencil to mark your music so that you know what to look out for the next time you play your part in the band or orchestra. I always teach the students that it is ok to write on your part. \r\n\r\n\"Pencils remember; people forget.\"\r\n\r\nThe plastic mirrors help fix fingers on instruments as well as embouchure issues on mouthpieces. Too many students try to fix their problems by looking at their fingers with their instrument away from their face. The problem with this is that it is \"fixed\" away from their face, but as soon as they put the instrument back on their face, the problems resurface.
