Students were able to show their learning by creating a game. In our unit, students had to find a new home for humanity because earth is being taken over by a Zombie Apocalypse. Groups had to consider which features in include in their new home like, the culture of their community, decide what physical features their new home would include, and how to design their shelter. Part of the process of creating their new home is figuring out how to migrate to the area they choose. Students were asked to create a game on this migration process.\r\nIn order to prepare students for this project, students learned about culture, physical features and how they can impact an area you live in, what skills people would need to survive, and they had to do this all while working as a team. In addition, students learned about early civilizations, their beginnings, and what made them successful. Students were given an option to base their new home for humanity on an early civilization. \r\nAberdeen Middle School is a Title I school. Thirty-five percent of our students are unhoused, living in temporary shelters. One quarter of our students have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504s. This means that many students have learning difficulties. Their lives are stressful in many ways. This sometimes may mean school is not always a priority for them. We started trying to focus on Project Based learning to take the stress off testing and give students an optional form of assessment. Project-based learning also gives students the opportunity to work in groups and learn from each other. They also have the freedom to be creative.\r\nThe students were very excited when the materials arrived. I took the time to show them everything that came in the package. Students then were asked to pick out what pieces they wanted to use in their game. Students were given an option to make a board game or a card game. It was surprised by the variety of choices students made. Some students wanted to combine card game elements with board game elements. They loved being able to pick out which pieces to include in their project. The Candy land boards were a favorite amongst the students. Many students based their games on popular games like Monopoly Chutes and Ladders, or Candyland, but changed the name to represent their civilization or culture. I personally liked seeing the elements students included in their games. One group made a deck of cards based on Viking culture. They included elements of culture like food, clothing, and jobs in their deck of cards. \r\nWe hope in the future to host a family game night where students can play their games with their families. Not only can students show their families the work they are doing in the classroom, but we can use this as an opportunity for the community to come together. We love holding community events in our school. This would make a great annual event in our community. \r\nWhile GimKit will always remain my students' favorite classroom activity, they enjoyed making their own games and tie it to their learning. Thank you for making this possible.","fullyFundedDate":1762996296046,"projectUrl":"project/zombie-apocalypse-game-supplies/9618892/","projectTitle":"Zombie Apocalypse Game Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Uleck","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10186485_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y304&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755527172546","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10186485"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64639","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1071,"numTeachers":80,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":46,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":64639,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Aberdeen Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Aberdeen Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/harford-county-public-school-district/aberdeen-middle-school/64639"}
