When the tempera cake paints arrived, my students were thrilled—many had never used such vibrant, easy-to-blend colors before. First graders jumped into their gator artwork, using bold lines and playful shapes for their birds to explore how color and mix media can express personality Second graders created abstract dog portraits, experimenting with creating different shapes and expressive brushwork. These abstract dog portraits overflow with bold mark-making, inventive color choices, and unexpected combinations of line and shape. The use of tempera cake paints allowed for rich saturation and control, while fine-tip markers added precision and personality. The results are dynamic, expressive, and rooted in each student's growing understanding of abstraction and design. These projects helped students build foundational skills in line, shape, color and pattern while celebrating their unique styles. Now, we're transitioning into fall-themed art, using the same materials to explore seasonal palettes, leaf shapes, and cozy textures.
