Because the tins are magnetic and self-contained, they are perfect for our autism classroom, where students benefit from structured, visually clear, and hands-on learning tasks.\r\nOne especially meaningful moment happened during a math center focused on addition within 10. A student who typically avoids paper-pencil tasks eagerly opened a tin, placed the mat inside the magnetic lid, and independently used the magnets to solve problems. The tactile magnets and visual layout helped him stay engaged far longer than traditional worksheets, and he proudly showed his completed board to the class. For many of our students, the hands-on format reduced frustration and increased confidence.\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reactions were immediate—huge smiles, excitement, and lots of \"Can I try?\" requests using both speech and AAC devices. The bright visuals, easy-grip magnets, and clear structure made the activities feel like a game rather than work. Students who usually struggle with sustained attention were motivated to sit, manipulate the pieces, and complete tasks from start to finish.\r\nThese resources are especially impactful for our learners with autism because they provide concrete, interactive practice with foundational skills like counting, shapes, sequencing, simple addition, and sentence building in a format that supports fine motor development and hands-on engagement. The magnetic lid becoming the work board has made transitions smoother and reduced lost materials during centers.\r\nNext, we are using these tins to support individualized IEP goals and current lessons aligned to our alternate curriculum. Students will rotate through structured workstations targeting:\r\nAddition within 10\r\nNumber identification and sequencing\r\nSentence completion and vocabulary development\r\nIndependent task completion and communication using AAC\r\nOur goal is to increase independence, engagement, and functional communication during academic tasks. With these materials, students are not only practicing math and language skills, but also building confidence, fine motor skills, and the ability to work independently—skills that are essential for lifelong learning.\r\nBecause of your support, our classroom now has accessible, hands-on tools that meet the sensory and learning needs of students with autism, allowing them to experience success in ways that traditional materials often cannot.","fullyFundedDate":1763924782644,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-fun-with-math-and-literacy/9847756/","projectTitle":"Hands-on Fun With Math and Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Sprague & Mrs. Bennett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1014988_orig.png?crop=347,347,x0,y23&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750458649011","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-sprague1"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64137","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":330,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":72,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":84.1,"schoolId":64137,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pasadena Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pasadena Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/anne-arundel-county-public-schools/pasadena-elementary-school/64137"}
