I have them working right in my classroom and they are building! They are talking with each other about designs they want to try, creating foldable furniture with intricate designs. They are thinking about different ways to cut out their ideas to show their thinking and they are lugging in cardboard! \r\n\r\nThis little machine designed for elementary students has turned my classroom into a maker space with endless possibilities. The best part- all of my students are keeping their fingers and toes! \r\n\r\nThank you for helping me to give my students real-life geometry lessons that have deep meaning and leave them asking for more. Thanks to you they can take their ideas and try them out without expensive materials or the need for dangerous equipment. They are assembling and painting their pieces with pride. They enter my room with enthusiasm and leave my classroom each day looking forward to coming back for more. You have made a difference here. Finally on every Thursday afternoon since the start of the school year, students stop by the tables set out in the hallway. It is late in the afternoon. The lunch program is over but there is still a few hours left before the students go home. Waiting for them is freshly made delicious sourdough bread. \r\n\r\nOur students say \"Please\" and \"Thank you.\" They remind each other it's a bread day with high fives. They request their favorites. They help bake, set up and clean up. They come back to see if there are any leftovers. Within five minutes it's all gone. \r\n\r\nWe literally break bread together as a school, thanks to you. It adds a special touch to our school. The impact has been immediate. I put out some of the materials in front of the kids as I handed back some of their work from last week. We are studying 2 and 3 dimensional objects. The vocabulary that we have used has been quite direct, correct and efficient. A few students began asking about the supplies and wanted to explore with them. I encouraged them to reimagine the assignments they just got back. The room then shifted. It could be felt, heard and seen. \r\n\r\nStudents were no longer talking about assignments, but how to create their ideas with the various materials. The language became very rich and more exploratory in nature. I heard \"I wonder\" ... and \"what if...\" It took all of five minutes and a few open boxes for the transition to take place. Some students watched while others dove in. The paints seemed to be the easiest to access but I heard others begin making plans to crochet some circles and spheres. They plan to teach another student how to do it. \r\n\r\nMy students left the classroom planning their work for tomorrow, brainstorming the possibilities and excited to come back together to bring their ideas to life. Today was day 1. Your gift has energized my high school classroom and reignited my love for teaching.
