Many of my learners love to read, but until now, they didn't always have access to high-interest books that matched their reading levels and personal interests. These new texts immediately grabbed their attention—students have been asking to read during free time, during transitions, and even at dismissal! One of my students who normally struggles to stay focused has been proudly choosing books from our new shelf every day. His excitement to share stories has boosted his confidence and improved his willingness to participate in class discussions.\r\n\r\nThese materials also strengthened essential literacy skills we have been working on: fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and making personal connections to text. During small groups, students naturally began talking about characters, predicting what might happen next, and comparing stories—skills that once needed much more prompting. It has been beautiful watching them move from \"I have to read\" to \"Can I read another one?\" The fidgets and motivational tools have equally helped students who require sensory support to stay calm, focused, and successful during independent reading time.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these resources allowed every child—including those with diverse learning needs—to feel seen, valued, and capable. One student with visual impairment was especially drawn to the high-contrast illustrations and tactile fidgets that helped him stay engaged throughout lessons. Another student proudly dug through the reward box to celebrate meeting his reading goals—a moment of joy made possible because of your kindness.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just place books and tools in our classroom—you created daily moments of pride, focus, laughter, and growth. Thank you for believing in my students and helping them discover a love for reading that will last well beyond this school year.","fullyFundedDate":1746699692678,"projectUrl":"project/brave-kind-and-focused-tools-to-help/9238127/","projectTitle":"Brave, Kind, and Focused: Tools to Help Us Grow","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Griffith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8139459_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753106961488","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsgriffithsclass"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_18215","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":210,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":59,"percentWhite":11,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":27,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":63.9,"schoolId":18215,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Alton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Alton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/louisiana/st-tammany-parish-school-district/alton-elementary-school/18215"}
