I often use manipulatives during my math lessons. I find that a hands on learning experience helps my students thrive! Being able to create math tool kits for my students to utilize has made my math lessons more efficient. My students love using manipulatives during math because they get to show their work in a variety of ways! \r\n\r\nThis school year my students have been able to utilize place value charts, number lines, number bonds, and many more manipulatives included in their math tool kit. The tool kits have made it easier for my students to keep their work neat and organized. They are able to utilize these kits during class and during their assessments. With your donations, I received over 10 books and materials that can be used in our special education classrooms for children with limited verbal or nonverbal skills. The ages range from three to nine, so having hardback books for some of the smaller hands is essential for durability. A few of the books have textures the children can touch creating a multi-sensory approach to reading by hearing the words, seeing the pictures/words and touching various textures. Other books have flaps to work on their fine motor skills and cognitive skills peaking curiosity of what is behind those flaps. \r\nI received some materials as well in this project that helped me create activities to further engage the children in reading. Due to delays in their development, it is often difficult for these students to sit and listen/process a book unless it is broken down into smaller parts or interactive for them. These students also need modified activities to respond to comprehension questions due to limited verbal skills. I created matching activities to go along with the books where a student can match the pictures from the book, match numbers when counting or words to pictures. The play-doh is another tool we are using to make letters, numbers or objects from the vocabulary in the book (ex. snowman for the book \"One Snowy Day\"). \r\nThere are so many ways to modify activities to go along with these books that gives us plenty of opportunities for increasing reading skills as well as all the other skills these children work on - listening, taking turns, comprehension, speech, fine motor, etc. \r\nRepetition is key, so I chose books with sort of a monthly theme - Back to School, Pumpkins, Turkey, Christmas, Winter, etc, so we could use one book a month to read each month and participate in the activities made for that particular book in a small group or individual basis. \r\nThe students are loving these new books and activities!","fullyFundedDate":1728312608970,"projectUrl":"project/adapted-books-for-nonverbal-students/8497042/","projectTitle":"Adapted Books for Nonverbal Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Alisha","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8549433_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1721096447092","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8549433"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_12518","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":662,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":93,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"25.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":69.8,"schoolId":12518,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Beauregard Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Beauregard Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/louisiana/beauregard-parish-school-district/south-beauregard-elementary-school/12518"}
