As we read about Nick Allen and his creative idea to invent a new word, students were introduced to concepts like word origins, dictionaries, and social influence. We practiced identifying cause and effect, making inferences about character motivation, and drawing connections between text and real-life situations. This book sparked a classroom-wide vocabulary project where students invented and tried to spread their own new words. It was both fun and incredibly educational—a perfect combination.\r\n\r\nWith The Whipping Boy, students were immersed in a historical setting that led to rich discussions about justice, friendship, and personal growth. We explored character development as Prince Brat and Jemmy evolved throughout their adventures, and we analyzed themes like privilege and responsibility.
