The hanging clouds and koala lights have helped transform our calming area into a space where students can take a break, regulate their emotions, and prepare themselves to return to learning. The sensory stickers have been especially helpful because students can use them right at their desks or in other areas of the classroom when they need sensory input.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching a student recognize that they were becoming overwhelmed and independently go to our calming area. They spent a few minutes enjoying the soft lights and sensory materials before returning to their activity. Seeing our students begin to learn ways to regulate themselves and communicate what their bodies need is such an important step toward independence.\r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they first saw the new materials! They immediately noticed the hanging clouds and calming koala lights and were eager to explore the space. The soft lighting created a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that quickly caught their attention. The sensory stickers were also an instant favorite. Students loved feeling the different textures and discovering which ones they preferred.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, sensory supports are more than just something fun—they can help them feel calm, focused, and comfortable enough to participate in learning. It was wonderful to see their excitement and know that these resources were chosen specifically with their individual needs in mind.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue teaching students how to recognize when they need a sensory or calming break and how to appropriately use these resources as tools for self-regulation. We are working on building independence, communicating needs, transitioning between activities, and returning to classroom tasks after taking a break.\r\n\r\nAs students become more comfortable with these strategies, we hope they will need fewer adult prompts to choose the tools that work best for them. These skills will support them not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Your generosity has helped us create an environment where students can feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. They enjoy having the ability to move freely but still remain in one spot.
