It makes a world of difference to our students to have many different engaging texts for our readers to choose from for their independent reading. Research has shown that just 20 minutes of reading a day can lead to a significant improvement in students academics and test scores. In our classroom we start the first 10 minutes of every day participating in reading a book of student choice. Each child gets access to a world of knowledge and imagination at their fingertips. We also celebrate literacy in our classroom with book tastings(students sample books from different genres), book talks (engaging in academic standards based discussions with their peers about the books they are reading), and first chapter Fridays (Students read the first chapter of a new book and discuss whether they would be interested in reading it or not). This community of learners is growing and engaging with literacy skills at so many levels and now thanks to your generous contribution, we have a wealth of resources to choose from. With your help, students were able to play on good quality reeds for the ENTIRE second semester of the school year. When I switched students from their old mouthpieces to their new ones, or replaced a ligature with broken screws, students were amazed with the different sounds they were making on their instruments. Some of the students commented on how much better their tone was, and others commented on how much better it felt to play on this higher quality equipment. The reeds were used by students until they went bad, but the mouthpieces and ligatures will be around for years in our program to continue to benefit students. Overall, all 3 band programs earned DISTINGUISHED overall ratings at our district assessment this year, something the program has not done in many years.
