This project has allowed my sixth grade students to engage in a meaningful, hands-on learning experience while designing a functional sensory corner that supports mental health, self-regulation, and diverse learning needs.\r\n\r\nThrough this collaborative project, students worked in small groups to apply their understanding of sensory materials, safety considerations, and spatial design. They measured the classroom space, thoughtfully planned material placement, and justified their design choices based on how different sensory inputs support focus, emotional regulation, and accessibility. The process strengthened teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills while serving as a summative assessment of their learning.\r\n\r\nThe donated materials—including liquid sensory floor tiles, a hammock chair with stand, a saucer swing, exercise mats, and a sensory peanut ball—created a calming, flexible space that benefits students with disabilities as well as those experiencing stress, anxiety, or sensory overload. These tools provide students with safe opportunities for movement, tactile input, and quiet reflection, helping them return to learning more focused and confident.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and believing in the importance of mental health, inclusion, and hands-on learning. Your support has made a lasting difference in our classroom and will continue to benefit students for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1759247843218,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-corner/9697156/","projectTitle":"Sensory Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Thomas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp404885_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1471450326489","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sthomaspltw"},{"teacherId":404885,"projectId":9406097,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping bring our Chicken Life Cycle Science Project to life. Because of your generosity, 110 students at Sebastian Elementary School in Jackson, Kentucky—nearly all from low-income households—will have the opportunity to engage in an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience that extends far beyond the textbook.\r\n\r\nThis project allows my four middle school science classes to rotate throughout the year as they actively participate in the complete life cycle of a chicken. With four egg incubators, each class will independently oversee the hatching process, from monitoring temperature and humidity to observing embryonic development and celebrating the moment chicks emerge. Students will then continue caring for the chicks using a brooder, feeder, waterer, and nutritious starter feed, ensuring the animals' health and well-being during their earliest stages of life.\r\n\r\nThese materials transform our classroom into a living laboratory. Students are not just observing science—they are practicing it. They take responsibility for daily care, data collection, problem-solving, and teamwork. Through this process, they gain a deeper understanding of animal life cycles, biology, and environmental systems, while also developing empathy, patience, and accountability.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, this will be their first opportunity to interact closely with living animals in an educational setting. The experience supports both academic growth and mental health by fostering emotional connection, confidence, and a sense of purpose. Students learn what it means to care for another living being and to see the direct impact of their actions.\r\n\r\nThis project directly supports equity by bringing high-quality lab equipment and experiential learning to a historically underfunded classroom. Your support ensures that all students—regardless of background—have access to meaningful, engaging science education.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and investing in their curiosity, compassion, and future.","fullyFundedDate":1758636761530,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-agriculture/9406097/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Agriculture","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Thomas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp404885_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1471450326489","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sthomaspltw"},{"teacherId":404885,"projectId":9406383,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous support of our science project at Sebastian Elementary School. Because of you, 110 middle school students in Jackson, Kentucky—nearly all from low-income households—now have meaningful, hands-on opportunities to explore the natural world in ways that were not previously possible.\r\n\r\nThese resources have transformed our classroom into a living laboratory. Students are developing scientific skills as they observe life cycles, explore plant growth, and make real-world connections between plants, animals, humans, and the environment. Through activities such as studying the chick life cycle, examining plant development, and caring for live plants, students are gaining a deeper understanding of the diversity and interconnectedness of life.\r\n\r\nOne of the most impactful aspects of this project is the opportunity for students to grow their own plants throughout the school year. This experience fosters responsibility, patience, and critical thinking while reinforcing the needs of living things. When students are able to take their plants home, learning extends beyond the classroom and encourages continued growth—both academically and personally. For many students, this is their first opportunity to care for a living organism, and it has already sparked curiosity, pride, and confidence.\r\n\r\nYour support directly impacts an historically underfunded classroom by providing high-quality lab materials that promote equity in science education.
