What once felt like \"work\" now feels like discovery. Each day, my students—ranging from 9th to 12th grade and all receiving special education services—use the materials you helped provide to build real-world reading and writing skills. The Daily Academic Vocabulary and Language Practice Journals have created a routine in which students begin class by connecting words to their meanings, often leading to lively \"word detective\" discussions about context clues and figurative language. Games like Classwords, Super Sleuth, and I Have, Who Has? transformed grammar and vocabulary from something they dreaded into something they look forward to. What used to be silent groans at the sight of a worksheet are now replaced with laughter, competition, and teamwork.\r\n\r\nOur new classroom library has also sparked something I haven't seen in years—students choosing to read. Because the books are written at accessible reading levels but tell mature, age-respectful stories, my students finally see themselves as readers. One student who once refused to read aloud now volunteers to lead our small-group reading sessions, while another proudly finished The Outsiders and immediately asked, \"What's next?\" The power of having books they can actually read and relate to cannot be overstated—it's changed the tone of our class and, in many ways, their belief in themselves.\r\n\r\nEven our simplest additions, like journals, stickers, and colored pencils, have created meaningful outlets for creativity and self-expression. Students decorate their journals, reflect on personal growth, and track progress toward goals. For many, this has become a safe space to process thoughts and celebrate small wins. What you've given my students is so much more than pencils, games, or books—you've given them access, dignity, and joy in learning. Students have been able to design prototypes, create models to support their projects, and experiment with ideas that connect directly to real-world applications. My students, and myself, are now stocked up on the essential materials that we will need throughout the year. \r\nI had pencils, notebooks, highlighters, erasers, etc out and ready for my students when they walked in. Most students are not comfortable asking for something when they need it, especially at the beginning of they year before they get to know the teacher, so it was helpful to have all of this readily available to them to take as needed. There is also plenty to supply them with throughout the year as needed. \r\nIn addition to the supplies we were provided with, we also received several organizational items that will help throughout the year. For instance, the filing cabinet that I received helped me store the extra items that the students may need through the year. Additionally, the paper trays will allow me to store more in a separate space instead of on my desk, thus I will have room to allow individual students to come to my desk to work with one-on-one as needed. \r\nI want to once again thank you for your generosity and investment in my classroom. This project is always a fun learning time. Students will use the pens, paper, glue, markers, and other things to create what we call a post mortem of a character. They get to work in groups and analyze what we've learned and read during the unit. It's hard as a teacher to supply things for so many students. It gets very expensive. And things break or markers dry up more quickly when you have 100 plus students using them. This makes my job a little easier because I don't have to rush and buy extra things with my own money. We have been using them for about 2 weeks now and they have worked perfectly. Although I haven't ever heard of the brand of weight these are, they seem to be very high quality and just as good as other more \"name brands\". We use them for basically every lift involving a barbell but specifically power cleans and deadlifts because they can bounce off the ground without breaking or cracking like iron weights could potentially to when used in that manner. \r\n \r\n As the weight started to come in, our student athletes were very excited. A lot of the bumper weights we have are 10-15 years old and have started to break in half or crack. a lot of them have done this in the past two years and we had gotten real low on weights to specifically use on the power clean and deadlift exercises. All the student athletes seem to be very proud of these weights being nice and new and to them we now have some equipment that's as nice or nicer than a bigger school then us that's in Lexington or Louisville.","fullyFundedDate":1745931020772,"projectUrl":"project/iron-bobcats/9251634/","projectTitle":"Iron Bobcats","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Shipley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9997009"},{"teacherId":9997041,"projectId":9257669,"letterContent":"When the weather and climate lab tools arrived, the energy in the classroom completely shifted. My 9th grade Earth and Space Science students were genuinely excited to open the boxes and see the kinds of instruments they've only seen in diagrams. Holding real tools like anemometers, thermometers, and rain gauges made the science feel more real to them.\r\n\r\nWe put the materials to use right away during a week-long project where students built their own mini weather stations. In small groups, they set up observation areas just outside our classroom and began collecting daily weather data. Each day, they recorded temperature, wind speed, humidity, and precipitation, then used that data to make short-term forecasts. Watching them collaborate, argue over predictions, and proudly present their findings was a highlight of the semester.\r\n\r\nOne student who's usually pretty quiet even asked to take the hygrometer home for the weekend so he could compare indoor and outdoor humidity levels. It was a small moment, but it showed me how much more invested students become when they're given the chance to explore real-world science in a hands-on way.\r\n\r\nThese tools have had a big impact on how my students engage with the material. They're more curious, more confident, and much more willing to ask questions and test their own ideas. Our next step is to begin tracking longer-term weather trends and tying that into broader topics like climate change and severe weather events.\r\n\r\nI'm really grateful for the support that made this possible. It's not just about having better equipment, it's about helping students see themselves as capable learners and future scientists.","fullyFundedDate":1746786069642,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-earth-space-science-to-life-wit/9257669/","projectTitle":"Bringing Earth Space Science to Life with Hands-On Learning Tools","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Robbins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9997041"},{"teacherId":9647647,"projectId":8625567,"letterContent":"Words cannot express my gratitude for your generosity and support for this project and our classroom. Thanks to your support, my high school special education students enjoy classic novels that meet them exactly where they are—academically, emotionally, and developmentally.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom differs from traditional settings. My students have unique learning needs and reading levels from 2nd to 6th grade—what we lack in ability, we make up for in heart! These new books have created an environment where students feel seen, capable, and motivated to grow. \r\n\r\nWith the addition of these texts, we've been working on essential reading skills such as vocabulary and comprehension. More importantly, we've used these texts as a springboard to dive into deeper discussions around character motivation, empathy, and resilience. Our classroom is filled with voices asking, \"What would I have done?\" or \"How does this relate to?\"—questions that show students are not just reading words; they're thinking.\r\n\r\nOne student, \"J,\" came into my class this year having never finished a book independently. With access to these books, he has learned to appreciate reading on his own; he even asked to take home a book over the weekend. That's the power of well-matched reading materials and the gift you've given.\r\n\r\nAnother student, \"M,\" struggles with confidence. Reading aloud used to be a source of anxiety. However, with the addition of our new novels, she volunteered to read in small groups. Her peers cheered, and her smile says it all. That moment was more significant than just a reading skill—it represented a breakthrough in self-esteem.\r\n\r\nThanks to your kindness, my students turn pages, have conversations, and build skills that will carry them far beyond the classroom.
