Your generosity has already begun to transform the way my students experience reading and learning.\r\n\r\nWhat skills and lessons are being introduced?\r\nThe new books allow us to build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and develop critical thinking. Many of the texts also introduce Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, giving students opportunities to practice empathy, reflect on choices, and talk through real-life challenges. Culturally rich stories are helping them see new perspectives, encouraging both respect for diversity and curiosity about the world.\r\n\r\nWhat does reading look like in our classroom?\r\nReading time has become a space where students feel both excited and calm. Small groups gather with books in hand, sometimes reading aloud and sometimes reading independently with quiet focus. Afterward, we come together to share reflections, make connections, and even act out parts of the story. Our discussions are lively and meaningful, often going beyond the text to include personal stories or ideas about how to handle different situations.\r\n\r\nWhich students are especially enjoying the books?\r\nSeveral students who once struggled to find books that felt \"just right\" are now deeply engaged. One student who was hesitant to read in front of others now volunteers to share passages because he feels connected to the characters. Another student who often kept to herself now starts conversations with her classmates about the choices characters make, which has boosted her confidence and social connections. For many, the SEL books have become favorites, because the characters feel relatable and the lessons apply directly to their lives.\r\n\r\nClosing thoughts\r\nWhat I love most about my students is their energy, curiosity, and resilience. These new books have provided more than academic growth. They have given my students tools for understanding themselves and others, and a safe space to practice those lessons together. Thanks to you, our classroom library is becoming a place where students not only grow as readers, but also as caring and thoughtful people.","fullyFundedDate":1746786328263,"projectUrl":"project/recharging-with-reading/9271852/","projectTitle":"Recharging with Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Brown","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9570969_orig.jpg?crop=2298,2298,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742131182792","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9570969"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_57406","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":335,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":90,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":48.3,"schoolId":57406,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Black Traditional Magnet Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Black Traditional Magnet Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kansas/wichita-public-schools/black-traditional-magnet-elementary-school/57406"}
