My Biology students were so thrilled to use and have their own microscope to be utilized in our laboratory rather than sharing it with a partner or a group of three (3). They are enabled to practice and hone their skills in manipulating the compound microscope and at the same time enjoying the things they can see what their naked eyes can't see. \r\n\r\nRecently, my students observed the plant cells (onion) and animal cells (their own cheek cells). First, they practiced making their own specimens by staining cells, iodine for onion and crystal violet for cheek cells. Then, they viewed the specimens under the microscopes from scanning objective lens to high power objective lens. Lastly, they tried to sketch the onion cells and cheek cells and compare and contrast their structures together. They enjoyed most viewing the cheek cells because these cells were derived from their own body.
