They loved talking about \"The Great Wave off Kanagawa\" which they also talked about in their general third-grade classroom as part of their Wit and Wisdom literature program. They loved seeing the connection between art and their general classroom subject matter. Students talked about what subject matter would be appropriate for their artwork. We reviewed the different types of artwork; portrait, still life and landscape. Hokusai created a seascape with Mount Fuji in the background, but he also created other types of art. Students were able to use personal experiences to choose their subject matter. \r\nWe talked about how woodblock prints are made and compared it to foam-plate relief printing. They enjoyed working in the relief printing format from a foam plate that is similar to Hokusai's process. They discovered practice improved their prints. We used two pieces of construction paper to practice eight times. It was hard to know how much water to spray on the paper without being too much or too little. The new markers made adding the ink to the foam plate easier and more effective. We are now using the binders regularly during ELA lessons to help students stay organized, review skills, and easily find resources when they need them.\r\n\r\n One special moment has been seeing students independently open their binders to find a resource they need while working on reading or writing. It has been wonderful to see them take more responsibility for their learning and feel proud of the work they are collecting.\r\n\r\n As we continue through the school year, students will keep adding new ELA resources and work to their binders. Pictures of empty instrument cases isn't very exciting, but MY excitement is unmatched!! This year I rented instruments to over 30 students, and many of our cases no longer latch or zip, which means the instrument really can't be used outside the classroom. These damaged cases have been retired and students now have the ability to take their instrument home safely to practice. The students were so excited to learn that they could securely pack up their instrument and take it home, and past experience tells me that they will be more motivated to take good care of a new instrument case (compared to one that is covered in duct tape and falling apart).\r\n\r\nOur cases are decades old, so I know that these new cases will last for years and have an impact in my classroom for years to come. The speaker is working flawlessly and is exactly what we needed for our space - it provides high-quality sound and is able to play loudly enough that we can play along at the same time and still hear the speaker.\r\n\r\nBecause of this one piece of technology, I am able to provide a much more well-rounded educational experience for my students. Students have been able to listen to other performances which is another resource for effective modeling and inspiration, play along with metronome/drum tracks to help us establish a sense of pulse and maintain a steady beat, and play along with accompaniment tracks which helps us develop musicality. Our spring concert is around the corner, and afterwards we will have the ability to watch/hear a recording of our performance to celebrate our hard work and progress and evaluate our performance as we set goals for continued improvement. This resource has also helped me meet our district curriculum objectives and has made our overall day-to-day classroom experience more meaningful and fun.
