We were able to buy the items we needed for our Sensory Room and we are making great use of it! The special needs students in our program, as well as their peers, are enjoying the equipment. It provides a space where they can take a break and get some of their sensory needs met.\r\n In our program we have 3-5 year olds in 3 general education preschool classrooms. Many of the special needs students have a diagnosis of Autism. The students with special needs spend as much time as they can with their peers, but they sometimes get overstimulated in the large group setting. The Sensory Room offers a place for them to take a break and unwind. We were able to purchase a sensory tent which provides a dark quiet place to take a break. The students love to go in the tent and snuggle up with stuffed animals. The climber and slide, spinning chair, arch rocker and swing provide a fun area to move, climb, spin, and jump. Our students have a lot of energy to get out between work times and lessons. After taking their breaks, they are able to sit and focus with their friends in the classroom. \r\n The weighted and compression vest have helped our students better regulate their emotions. The \"squeeze\" from the vest provides the feeling of pressure which helps them to stay calm. It helps them to be able to spend more time in the classroom with their friends and to get more out of the lessons and activities. The headphones we were able to purchase also help to reduce the classroom noises, which sometimes bother our special needs students. One of our students is bothered by the hum of the fluorescent lights in the school. The headphones block that sound and help him learn and enjoy his day. \r\n\r\nAll of the materials we were able to purchase have made such a big difference for our students. It is so great to see the pleasure they get and the bright smiles on their faces.","fullyFundedDate":1735238136328,"projectUrl":"project/special-needs-sensory-room/8730809/","projectTitle":"Special Needs Sensory Room","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. K","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8618698"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_51074","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":518,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":73,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.4,"schoolId":51074,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Orange Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Orange Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/iowa/waterloo-community-school-district/orange-elementary-school/51074"}
