I have a large number of junior high students who love reading and learning about history. These books were such a wonderful addition to our classroom, as the students are expected to read eight independent books of their choice during the school year at their level. These history books will provide many of them with their favorite genres. \r\n This year has been a challenge with my incoming 7th graders. I have many reluctant and below grade level readers. These books help provide them with quality titles and literature that capture their interests. Engaging a student's interest in a book is half the battle. When students find interesting topics that they enjoy, they learn that reading can actually be fun. The more they read, the easier it gets, and the higher they score. They become life-long learners.","fullyFundedDate":1755722985140,"projectUrl":"project/highlight-history-with-books/9371597/","projectTitle":"Highlight History with Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mousel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp341835_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1527429547193","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/341835"},{"teacherId":341835,"projectId":8848023,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our classroom library. These last two years, we have had an overwhelming boy-to-girl ratio, and most of our boys love hunting and fishing. The titles you bought for our library were ones that the students picked out and genres they love. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading them and working on our comprehension skills these past few months.\r\n\r\nIn our Second Chance Reading classroom, we use titles the students pick to independently build upon and practice their vocabulary, comprehension, and scanning skills. We teach with explicit instruction to demonstrate the comprehension strategy we are working on for that week, and the students then practice that same strategy in their chapter books of choice. Most often, we practice the QAR strategy (Question-Answer Relationships) to teach them what type of question they are being asked and how/where to locate the answer. The hardest part is the inference, where we infer what the author is trying to tell us. These books are vital for teaching them how to infer meaning from what the text says and using the textual evidence to cite their opinions and support their reasoning.\r\n\r\nWhen students have the book titles available that capture their interests, learning these strategies becomes easier because they are engaged in the text.
