Because of you, my students now have access to a collection of engaging, hands-on games designed to strengthen social skills—resources that are already making a meaningful difference in how they interact, communicate, and work with one another each day.\r\n\r\nHow we're using the new materials\r\nThe social-skills games you provided have quickly become an essential part of our weekly routine. We use them during small-group lessons focused on building communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. Each game offers students the opportunity to practice skills such as taking turns, sharing leadership roles, expressing their thoughts respectfully, and listening to others' ideas. By providing a structured and supportive environment, these games help students engage with peers in positive ways, especially those who often feel unsure during group activities.\r\n\r\nStudents rotate through different games, each one reinforcing a specific target skill. Some games encourage cooperation toward a shared goal, while others help students read social cues or make decisions as part of a team. I've noticed that students are more willing to take risks, express ideas, and collaborate when they are engaged in these activities.\r\n\r\nA meaningful classroom moment\r\nOne moment that truly stood out happened during a cooperative board game. A student who typically struggles with social anxiety and avoids group participation took on a leadership role within his team. He initiated discussion, asked his classmates for input, and guided the group through the decision-making process with patience and kindness. His peers responded positively, and the entire table celebrated their success together. Watching him step into a confident, supportive role was a powerful reminder of how impactful these tools can be for students who need a safe and structured way to build relationships.\r\n\r\nTheir first reaction\r\nWhen the students first saw the collection of games, the excitement was immediate. They crowded around the table, reading the boxes, flipping through instructions, and asking which game we would play first. Several students who are often hesitant in social situations were eager to participate because the games gave them clear expectations and a predictable structure. Their enthusiasm has continued each time we bring out the materials.\r\n\r\nWhat's next\r\nAs we continue using these games as part of our social–emotional learning lessons, students will move into the next phase: applying these skills beyond game time. Over the coming weeks, students will participate in short reflections where they identify which teamwork strategies helped their group succeed, how they handled challenges, and how they can use those same social skills during class, lunch, recess, and other unstructured settings. These guided reflections will help them connect what they practice in the games to real-world interactions.\r\n\r\nYour donation has created an environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and excited to grow socially and emotionally. Thank you for believing in my students and helping them build the confidence and skills they will carry long beyond this school year.","fullyFundedDate":1757807693055,"projectUrl":"project/developing-life-skills-through-games/9454149/","projectTitle":"Developing Life skills Through Games","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Breuer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10074415"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_51242","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":263,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":31,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":96,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"18.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":0.0,"schoolId":51242,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mfl Marmac High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mfl Marmac High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/iowa/mfl-marmac-community-school-district/mfl-marmac-high-school/51242"}
