I work hard to get my students fired up about reading while also helping them understand just how important becoming a strong reader is. Thanks to you, they now have so many more opportunities to find books they truly love!\r\n\r\nMy students are especially obsessed with graphic novels right now! One of my absolute favorite things is having students ask if they can take a book home to read over the weekend. As a teacher, there is nothing better than watching a child choose to spend their free time reading. We also use these books to grow important reading skills. Students practice retelling stories, making predictions and inferences, and identifying themes. I especially love using our books to talk about the lessons characters learn and how we can apply those same lessons to our own lives.\r\nMost importantly, these books are helping my students see themselves as readers. I have students who begin the year reading only 10–25 words per minute, and as their confidence and love of books grow, I get to watch them work toward reading 80–100 words per minute. \r\n\r\nThat growth is incredible, but what means even more to me is seeing their love of reading grow right alongside their skills. You didn't just give my classroom a new library. You gave my students stories to get lost in, opportunities to become stronger readers, and books they are genuinely excited to pick up each day. While reading is exciting on its own, we use these texts to teach important skills such as making inferences, identifying theme, analyzing characters, determining the meaning of unfamiliar words, summarizing, and supporting ideas with evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is much more than simply finishing a book. We read independently, with partners, and together as a class. Students stop to think, ask questions, make predictions, discuss their ideas, and return to the text to find evidence. These books give us meaningful opportunities to have conversations about characters, challenges, relationships, and the different perspectives people can bring to a story. Most importantly, they help students see reading as something enjoyable rather than simply another assignment.\r\n\r\nI have especially noticed students who were previously hesitant to pick up a book becoming more interested in reading. Some students have found books that they are excited to talk about with their classmates, while others have discovered genres and topics they had never considered reading before. It is incredibly rewarding to hear students recommending books to one another, discussing their favorite characters, and asking when they will have another opportunity to read.\r\n\r\nThe greatest impact has been seeing students become more confident readers. From grades kindergarten to 5th grade we are using them for various building challenges along with helping us understand different mathematical concepts. \r\nThe student's faces light up when they know we are going to be able to touch something and build something to understand what we are learning. They also get an immediate answer if their thinking is correct or the need to change something.
