My students were so excited when I told them about this project getting funded. They couldn't believe someone who didn't even know them would be so generous to provide materials for our classroom. During that unit, we explore how there can be something new created that was not there before (a chemical reaction). In the past, we simply talked about the chemical reaction that occurs and draw this the best we can. This year we were able to see the molecules breaking apart during the chemical reactions and see that you end with what you start with. \r\n\r\nA specific lab that we do that these materials enhanced was conducting an electrolysis lab. We add energy to water through electricity and see that gases are being produced. Students test properties to conclude that they are not the same two gases. We used the manipulative to show what we start with (water molecules H2O) and explore what gases could be created by this molecule breaking apart and rearranging. They determined and proved that hydrogen and oxygen gas was being created. Something that was evident was truly how powerful having these models are to deepening their understanding of a brand new concept. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for your generous donation.
