I told them they were for them next year when school started. They said they couldn't wait till next year to find out. I did pass out the donated food items to all of them to take home the last day they were with me. The food donated were items they liked and that they would be able to enjoy the first week of summer break. \r\n\r\nWhen they returned in the fall, the first thing students noticed was the great smell of some of the products. I gave each student a bag and then they were instructed to take one of each item. They were excited and said, \"It feels like we're shopping!\" There were lots of smiles and laughter. They opened some items to smell them. Shirts they tried on over their clothes. Deodorants were especially special for the 3-5 graders as they knew they needed them now. One student said, \"This is the first time I will have stuff just for me to use and not have to share with my brothers and sisters.\" Everything was given out evenly and students got to pick special colors for toothbrushes, socks, brush/pick/comb--whichever one worked for their hairstyle. They were so happy and excited walking back to their rooms with their bags and putting them in their backpacks or lockers to take home that day. There were enough items to give to the 1 and 2nd graders so I made bags for them myself and they got to pick personalized color items as well. All donated items help students come to school like all other students feeling groomed and ready for the day. I also look to see which students need clothing and shoes when the seasons change and we support as we can in our school from donations from community volunteers and organizations. Hygiene items are always needed and this is a great start for students this year. \r\n\r\nI teach English Learning lessons that are separate topics at each grade level: \r\nKinder-Step Into School; 1st-My Family; 2nd-Hello Neighbor!; 3rd-Happy to Help; 4th-Living Traditions; 5th-Crossing Between Cultures. The goal is to learn new vocabulary for students and they read stories on the topics, and classroom discussion reflecting on their life and culture and how it is similar and different to US communities. We also have an end of unit writing/project assignment and they will be making booklets, photograph collage, pottery, and a recipe book to display at the end of the year's EXPO event. We only meet 30 minutes daily so lots to get done for each unit that occurs over 20 school days or one unit per month.
