Each morning students are given a number and once their morning unpacking is completed, they grab the corresponding numbered box. There they find the morning challenge to make a pumpkin, tree, leaf, or now a turkey! They are using the vocabulary around the object they are to create with their stem materials. I love to hear them talk about the tendrils from their pumpkin or the sprout of their tree! Since we have nearly 20 minutes of time between our first arrival and our last arriving student, this keeps the students busy using their hands, communicating with their peers, reading the words, and creating the challenge word of the day. \r\nNot only have we used the materials in the morning for stem, but we have also used some of them in math and have plans to use more later in the year. The students connected some of the blocks together to make groups of tens and singles pieces as ones to work on our place value. We have also used them as one to one correspondence for addition and subtraction for the students that can not yet use the number line. They are excited to be able to choose which material they would like to use for the day. Later when we start working on 3-D shapes, some of the other stem bins will come in handy as the students will be able to make the shapes and use what they made to count the vertices and sides. We are so very appreciative of the materials and will continue to find ways to use them in our classroom this year and years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1757423284670,"projectUrl":"project/morning-stem-challenge/9692450/","projectTitle":"Morning Stem Challenge","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bryant","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3546015_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1458819178678","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3546015"},{"teacherId":3546015,"projectId":9563653,"letterContent":"Thank you again for your donation to help my students. We have been using these supplies everyday since they arrived! We have added school colored sand to one of our bins and colored rice to our other bin. The kids were very excited when they saw a delivery to our room and they couldn't wait to see what was inside. They have been very cooperative and very respectful with the supplies and to each other during the time they use the sensory bin. I especially love for my super young first graders to use the tweezers as well as my student with autism to help them strengthen their grip. They don't even know they are improving their writing capacity!\r\n We use this as a station for both math and reading time. The past few weeks we have been working on short vowel words. I will add a picture of the word to one bin and the actual word to the other. The students have so much fun using the tweezers to find the parts. It has certainly kept them engaged in their word. They are having fun and learning at the same time. We have also used these during math stations. This past week we worked on hundreds, tens, and ones. I placed a number in one bin and the building blocks in the rice. Students loved digging through to find the match! \r\n We have also used the stamp pads at least twice every week. I have several sets of rubber stamp letters the students can use to make words that match our phonics pattern for the week. They loved to use all the different colors and with so many color options, we can use a different color every time. In the future we will use the variety of colors to make our words and make the silent letter a different color. This will certainly help my students remember the letter belongs there even if it doesn't make a sound. \r\n The sensory bins and other supplies have been such a great addition to our classroom and I love that I can provide something fun and engaging for my students. I couldn't do it without your support! We had phonics books that went with each of our skills. The kids loved these read aloud and it helped them remember the skills as they had a connection to each character. Other students that weren't in our classrooms were also able to enjoy them. Older students that were struggling with phonics skills enjoyed the read aloud a as well. They made a great talking point for them as well \r\nWe also utilized the behavioral books. We used these as social stories to better understand each other.
