The students, counselors, a few teachers, and a grandparent all helped make the evening successful. We hosted our first dinner last spring and had additional funds to host a second dinner this fall. The meals were completely free for the families. \r\n\r\nDuring the dinner we shared conversation starters and games from The Family Dinner project. I learned about the Family Dinner project a couple years ago at a conference and I share the ideas with my students in cooking labs. The families participated in the activities while they ate dinner. The families took many resources home with them to incorporate in their family meals. The family dinner projects main focus is for families to connect more with their children during mealtimes to improve the mental health of everyone in the household. \r\n\r\nWe raffled off three baskets to families with kitchen utensils, potholders, games, cookbooks, fun conversation books, cupcake mix, and more. We also raffled off four $25 Amazon gift cards with student made wood pumpkins and cloth pumpkins. The gift cards were donated from Upstream Prevention. Dawn Laplante works with Upstream Prevention and she was one of the guest speakers. She spoke about some of her resources and also discussed the benefits of communication at the table. The other guest speaker was Rachel Peine, a Health & Human Science Educator with Purdue. She shared the 30 years of research that supports the importance of communicating and sharing meals with children can leave lasting positive effects. Purdue and Harvard along with many other universities support this research. \r\n\r\nThe dinner was student led and the students did an amazing job serving the families. The students served drinks, dinner, dessert, cleaned up and before the dinner they helped prepare the food. We served smoked pork BBQ, green beans, Mac & Cheese, potato salad, salad, brownies, lemonade, and sweet tea. I was really proud of the students. Everyone seemed to enjoy the dinner and the feedback I received was all positive.","fullyFundedDate":1740764418435,"projectUrl":"project/facs-essentials/9129453/","projectTitle":"FACS Essentials","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McFann's FACS Class","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3652084_orig.jpg?crop=313,313,x457,y156&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729721182015","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/brookemcfann"},{"teacherId":9802592,"projectId":8874858,"letterContent":"My students were so excited to see that they had a class set of headphones. We were able to purchase games such as Scrabble, Sorry, Connect 4, Spoons, and more. Not only do these games promote team building, friendship, creativity and deeper thinking, they also allow for students to unwind after a hard day or week full of classes. The engagement and completing of work in the classroom has risen considerably since purchasing games - students realize once they submit their work, with the expectation that the work is QUALITY work, they can have some down time to spend with friends. Plus, the games have allowed the classroom and I to have conversations regarding competitiveness and kindness towards others, especially when we want to win.\r\n\r\nELA is a tough subject to teach - many students struggle to find reading and English fun.
