My Pre-K students have embraced their roles as \"Little Scientists,\" eagerly using the magnifying glasses, bug catchers, and exploration tools to investigate the natural world around them. One of our favorite activities has been going on nature walks to search for insects, leaves, flowers, and rocks. Students work together to observe what they find, compare their discoveries, and record their observations through drawings and conversations. It has been incredible to watch them use new science vocabulary while asking thoughtful questions and sharing their excitement with one another.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students couldn't wait to begin exploring. Their faces lit up with excitement as they carefully examined bugs and plants through the magnifying glasses. Even students who are typically hesitant to participate became engaged and eager to share their discoveries. The hands-on experiences have encouraged teamwork, curiosity, and confidence while supporting language development in both English and Spanish. Seeing students naturally use descriptive words and ask questions about the world around them has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our learning, we'll expand our investigations by studying plant and insect life cycles, observing seasonal changes, and keeping simple nature journals to document our discoveries throughout the year. These resources have transformed outdoor time into meaningful learning experiences that inspire exploration, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of science. In art class, students are using pipe cleaners and beads to design bracelets and ornaments, practicing fine motor skills, pattern-making, and personal expression. Because our school has only had an art program for four years, many of these materials were completely new to our students. The excitement was immediate, students' eyes lit up as they explored the textures, colors, and possibilities, proudly sharing their creations with classmates and taking ownership of their work.\r\n\r\nIn music class, PreK and kindergarten students were introduced to rain makers and sandpaper as accessible percussion instruments. These materials allowed our youngest learners to actively participate in music-making in a developmentally appropriate way, something that can be challenging with more advanced percussion instruments. Students were thrilled to create sound independently, experiment with rhythm, and feel successful as musicians. The joy and confidence on their faces showed how meaningful it was for them to finally have instruments designed with their abilities in mind.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps involve collaboration between the art and music classrooms. Students will work together on a musical performance where their handmade art pieces will be used as decorations, and the rain makers and percussion materials will be incorporated into the performance itself. This cross-curricular project will allow students to see how art and music connect, reinforcing creativity, teamwork, and pride in their learning. Students are developing confidence as they explore different sounds and rhythms, and they now have more opportunities to collaborate and perform together.\r\n\r\nIn the art room, replenished and expanded materials have made a remarkable difference. Instead of running out of supplies quickly or needing to share limited resources, every table now has its own set of materials. This has reduced conflicts over supplies and allowed students to focus more on their creativity. They can fully explore their ideas without interruption, which has led to more thoughtful, expressive, and higher quality artwork.\r\n\r\nThe combination of art and music resources has also enriched our school-wide collaborations. Students have used these materials to create stage decorations for performances, integrate themes across subjects, and showcase their creativity in new and exciting ways.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has given our 570 students the chance to experience the arts more deeply and meaningfully than before. Their eagerness to explore, take care of the materials, and pursue new artistic opportunities shows just how much they value these classes. For some, these experiences are sparking interests that they want to continue into middle school and beyond, such as joining choir, band, orchestra, or taking advanced art classes.\r\n\r\nThanks to these resources, our classrooms, art shows and music programs have become more inclusive, more engaging, and more inspiring. The impact is visible every day in the joy, curiosity, and pride our students bring to their creative work.
