Students are actively engaging in structured, evidence-based practices such as guided breathing, sensory grounding, emotional identification, and self-regulation routines facilitated through the provided materials. During sessions, students are taught how to recognize physiological cues of stress, select an appropriate coping tool (weighted items, breathing visuals, tactile fidgets), and practice regulation strategies before returning to academic instruction. One particularly meaningful moment involved a student who previously required adult redirection during emotional escalation independently initiating a regulation sequence—using a breathing mat, naming their emotion on the chart, and transitioning back to class with improved focus and readiness to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen students were first introduced to the space, their responses reflected both excitement and relief. Many expressed that the Calm & Safe Space felt like a place where their emotions were \"understood\" and \"safe.\" Therapeutically, this allowed for immediate rapport-building and normalization of emotional experiences. The materials made it possible to implement trauma-informed interventions in real time—supporting emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness in developmentally appropriate ways. Rather than relying solely on verbal processing, students could engage in somatic and sensory-based regulation, which significantly increased participation, emotional insight, and skill retention.\r\n\r\nThanks to Michael Jordan & the Jordan Brand, the next phase of this work involves expanding these therapeutic interventions into classroom-based social-emotional lessons and small-group support. Students are now learning to generalize skills practiced in the Calm & Safe Space—such as identifying early warning signs, choosing coping strategies proactively, and re-engaging with instruction independently. Your support has not only enhanced learning outcomes but has strengthened students' emotional resilience, confidence, and sense of agency. We are deeply grateful for your investment in creating a school environment where healing and learning work hand in hand.","fullyFundedDate":1758202899524,"projectUrl":"project/tools-for-growth-play-therapy-project/9715871/","projectTitle":"“Tools for Growth: Play Therapy Project”","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Dawn Michaux James","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9411991_orig.png?crop=483,483,x0,y32&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1702570931599","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9411991"},{"teacherId":7471787,"projectId":7141057,"letterContent":"The students achieved higher levels on their standardized tests.
