We are using these books alongside a traditional novel in a compare-and-contrast unit. Both texts focus on the experiences of refugees, but they highlight very different journeys and perspectives. The graphic novel format allows students to see emotions and experiences brought to life visually, while the novel challenges them to imagine and analyze through text alone. Together, they help students practice critical thinking, compare different storytelling techniques, and explore how authors and illustrators convey themes of survival, resilience, and hope.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks like collaboration and excitement. Students are reading in pairs, stopping to point out details in the illustrations, and making thoughtful connections between the two texts. The graphic novels have been especially helpful for reluctant readers, who are now eager to jump into discussions because they feel confident noticing both the visual and written details. At the same time, strong readers are challenged to dig deeper into how format and perspective shape a story.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who normally shy away from longer novels have been thriving with the graphic novels. One student told me, \"I usually get lost in books, but I can really see what's happening here,\" which opened the door for him to share his ideas in class for the first time this year. These books are making reading more accessible, equitable, and exciting for everyone in the room. Your support has not only provided us with books but has also sparked meaningful conversations about empathy, culture, and perseverance.","fullyFundedDate":1746785729044,"projectUrl":"project/inspiring-young-readers-with-graphic-nov/9109663/","projectTitle":"Inspiring Young Readers with Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Shane","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9077613_orig.jpg?crop=2513,2513,x0,y58&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720793236825","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9077613"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_30101","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":289,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":17,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":91,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":96.3,"schoolId":30101,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Tremont Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Tremont Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/tremont-community-unit-school-district-702/tremont-middle-school/30101"}
