Until this year, students chose an animal, did research on its habitat, and then made a shoebox diorama that we displayed in our classroom 'museum.' I tried to think of ways to spice it up a bit, but how? One day in the library, I saw the Dr. Seuss book, Horton Hears a Who, and I knew what could help: getting down into the teeny weeny side of habitats. \r\n\r\nThat is why I asked for slides of materials and creatures from nature. Not knowing if the project would be funded, I did not tell my students about it until the day the materials arrived. They loved the idea of going small and developed so many questions as they learned! How can bees and flies both be pollinators? How are their wings similar and different? What would happen if pollinators disappeared? Why do we eat the roots of one plant, the seeds of another, the leaves of a third, and the fruit of a fourth? How has domesticating animals like sheep, cattle, and goats changed them in similar ways? What features and behaviors make an animal easy or hard to domesticate? \r\n\r\nOnce we are back from Winter Break, we will begin collecting our own natural materials from around school, and preparing our own slides. Your support has opened my students up to a new way of seeing and interacting with the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1724956020770,"projectUrl":"project/microscope-slides/8682444/","projectTitle":"Microscope Slides","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. P.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/521607"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_26467","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":346,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":46,"percentAsian":22,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"8.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.8,"schoolId":26467,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Euclid Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Euclid Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/river-trails-school-district-26/euclid-elementary-school/26467"}
