Right now, students are HEAVILY enjoying the perler beads and items that went along with the beads. So many items have been created and they have said they enjoy the opportunity to take a break and get creative.\r\nMore students than usual are now coming to the library because they know they can sit quietly or with friends to create. Yes, they get out of class (their goal every day!) but some have started trying to figure out how to build with the perler beads, taking the project farther than I thought they would! Unfortunately they lost use of their legs, not allowing them to utilize a sewing machine. When they showed interest in sewing club in the fall, I was so excited. But I quickly realized that we would need to get creative to allow them use of a sewing machine, as they are completely unable to use their legs. \r\nCurrently, other students in the building have been able to use the machine and it has been amazing to see them get excited. Unfortunately, our student who would most benefit from the machine has been out of school due to an injury. Then most of the students have me for study hall so they they can continue their project. Most students spend their time sketching, scrapbooking, and coloring. As the semester continues, we will be using different types of media to create their one page including paint, stamps, and more detailed scrapbooking pages. \r\n\r\nThe project was created by me to help create a safe space for my students to create and talk. Many of my students come from families that don't look like what the rest of the world says a family should look like-a mom, dad, and kids-and that alone affects kids so much.
