The students in my classroom all have varying degrees of trauma and often struggle with controlling their emotions. The autism sensory calm down tent has been an amazing addition. Whenever students are feeling stressed or over stimulated, they now have a place to go where they can get away from everyone and take a moment to regulate themselves. Sometimes, I have students who are unable to sleep at home, and the calm tent gives them a safe place to sleep a few hours so that they are able to do their best in class. \r\n\r\n The sensory wall has also been a great addition as well. Many of my student need sensory input throughout the day to help them regulate their emotions. The sensory wall allows them an area in the room where they can go to receive this sensory input without having to leave the room and miss instructional time. \r\n\r\n Finally the the fish tank, breathe buddy koala, and the educational manipulatives add to the students everyday classroom experience. These items encourage student engagement and hands-on learning as well as help create a calm learning environment. With your donations, we were able to create a classroom that not only meets students academic needs and allows them the hands-on experiences they need to succeed, but we are also able to address student trauma and help teach them self regulation strategies.
