As a class, we made our growth goal in Reading on the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) test. We grew at least one full grade level, with many students growing more than a full grade level. \r\n\r\nHaving our own copies of the books allowed us to annotate vocabulary, significant plot developments, character traits and changes, and our questions of the texts. The variety of historical fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction allowed us to apply these skills across genres. \r\n\r\nIn addition to all of this edu-jargon, the kids really liked having their own copies of the books. They grew to know the stories and texts very closely because they were literally and physically interacting with them. No level of post-it noting could allow for this. Highlighters flew, pens scribbled, pages had dog-ears, and the books were broken in. \r\n\r\nI expect that students' increased relationship with their books will continue throughout their lifetimes.
