Through this unit, students will be analyzing what goes into a dystopian society by using the books of their choice given by you. In doing so, students will not only continue to build their abilities to analyze literature that we've practiced throughout the year, but will also being to think critically about the world around them as they make real-world connections. \r\n\r\nFor this unit, students are working in literature circles (small groups), where each group has a different book they chose to read from the options provided. I have never seen this level of excitement or engagement in my classroom! With the option to read individually or with partners, all students spent the first week with their books circled up in their small groups taking turns reading aloud and stopping to discuss occasionally -- all without my prompting or an assignment to do so!\r\n\r\nStudents have already said how much each of them is enjoying the book they chose, and I can't wait to see where their discussions go (or the dystopias they create themselves at the end of the unit using the characteristics they analyze in their own novels). Due to a partnership with the National Museum of Mexican Art in which students crafter 3D self-portraits (pretty cool!), our units with our new books was a bit delayed. However, we were able to start reading and discussing Life of Pi -- and it has been an absolute hit so far!\r\n\r\nWe are using the novel for students to begin understanding the concept of authorial choice -- how authors choose to craft their work using things like point of view and plot structure to support larger meanings and impact our experiences as readers. As advanced readers and students, the children have really taken to the challenge and are enjoying this new lens for literature so far. \r\n\r\nThis year, I've structured reading in class to be more self-paced and independent; again, as a way to meet our students various needs and skillsets. We were only able to start the book before break with plans to finish it upon return. Yet, many students gleefully told me that they were enjoying the book so much that they planned to finish it over break.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who was admittedly dismayed at Shakespeare being left out of this year's syllabus and attempted an argument to put Romeo & Juliet back in the curriculum at the beginning of the year, approached me to thank me for assigning Life of Pi because she has fallen in love with the characters and is enjoying the philosophical nature of the book.\r\n\r\nNeedless to say, without you all, this would not have been possible.
