I planned to read A Toni Morrison novel with my students, but none of her novels had enough in stock for each of my students to enjoy their own copy. With this being said, I pivoted to a book that inspired Morrison! Reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston has been a fantastic time. My students struggled to grasp it at first; the accent and Southern language challenged them and their understanding. Yet as the book continued, they fell in love with the creative characters Hurston created. \r\n\r\nI will never forget their reactions to understanding the main character had three husbands and how they each passed away before her. They thought she had killed them all, and they wanted nothing more than to find out how. They have laughed at moments and sighed at others of domestic violence and colorism. The tough everyday themes of this book have fed my students' minds. As they think of who they are in comparison to the characters in the book. \r\n\r\nEach has set with themselves and reflected in assignments of playlist, engaging TikToks, and essay paragraphs on the adventures of Jaine in Eatoville and the Muck. This regular, public acknowledgment of positive behaviors serves as a powerful modeling tool, encouraging peers to emulate these qualities, which in turn fosters a more supportive and inclusive environment. \r\n\r\nWe hope that this will elevate the importance of student agency, ethical citizenship, and intercultural understanding, transforming the aspirational qualities of the Learner Profile into tangible, celebrated norms that define the school's identity and strengthen its IB community commitment.","fullyFundedDate":1755782789426,"projectUrl":"project/lets-celebrate-being-balanced-ib-learn/9559953/","projectTitle":"Let's Celebrate being Balanced! This project has impacted students tremendously as they use the provided resources daily. When students first saw the \"take what you need\" area in the classroom, they were so excited! While students were eager to take items right away, they first reflected on what it means to\"need\" something versus to \"want\" something. Students discussed needs versus wants and completed a journal prompt about what their personal needs and wants are in their lives. This helped students understand the value of these items and gave them perspective on who should be taking the items and when they may not need to. \r\n\r\nStudents have been enjoying the items and need them so much that we are nearly out of stock! If you are able to, we would greatly appreciate your continued support by helping us restock the \"take what you need\" area moving forward. The new technology and materials have made learning come alive — students are documenting their projects with the camera, curating digital portfolios, and discovering how art, design, and technology can work together to solve real-world problems. The organization cart has become the heartbeat of our space, helping students take ownership of their supplies and workstations, while the new rug has turned our classroom into a warm, collaborative area where ideas flow freely.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students has been seeing their imagination take shape. They're designing models, capturing their creative process, and sharing their work with pride. The art materials have encouraged students who once hesitated to express themselves to take creative risks and collaborate with others. I've seen students who struggled with engagement suddenly light up as they experiment with colors, textures, and digital tools — combining art with engineering and storytelling.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who once stayed quiet during discussions, has become a natural leader in the design studio. She now guides her peers through photo documentation and digital editing, inspiring others to see technology as a tool for creativity rather than just consumption. Your support has made all of this possible. You didn't just fund materials — you helped build a space where curiosity is celebrated, innovation is encouraged, and every student feels like a creator. Donors often use large screens at home for gaming or entertainment, but here it is an essential learning tool. The size and curve allow an entire small group—usually three to five students—to view their work together without crowding over a laptop. They can display coding windows, video-editing timelines, and storyboard sketches side-by-side, which makes it easier to spot details, give feedback, and make revisions in real time. The improved visibility has been especially beneficial for students with vision strain who often struggled to follow along on smaller screens. Several students have even commented that they feel \"more like professionals\" when editing their videos on the big display.\r\n\r\nThe Epson EcoTank printer has made an equally meaningful difference in how students share and celebrate their learning. Unlike a standard printer that constantly needs cartridges, the EcoTank's refillable ink system lets us print vibrant, full-color materials without worrying about running out of supplies mid-project. In just the first few weeks, students have printed over 150 pages of work: renewable-energy infographics, drone-city blueprints, entrepreneurship pitch boards, reflection posters, and even QR-code flyers linking to their STEM video explainers. Having the ability to produce high-quality prints right in our classroom means that ideas can move from digital concept to physical product within a single class period, saving valuable instructional time and keeping students motivated.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is the sense of ownership these tools give them. One particularly shy student who rarely spoke up in class took the lead on designing her team's renewable-energy poster. After she saw it printed in full color, she proudly presented it to the class—her confidence grew as she realized her ideas could have a visual impact. Another group working on a drone-based delivery prototype used the curved monitor to present their CAD design alongside their video pitch, allowing them to make last-minute edits during practice sessions. The technology has shifted the classroom dynamic: students now collaborate more effectively, take greater pride in their work, and pay closer attention to visual and audio quality because they know their final products will be displayed and shared.\r\n\r\nOverall, the new technology has elevated our STEM Storytellers program from concept to a more professional, real-world experience. Students aren't just completing assignments—they're producing polished media pieces, printed artifacts, and presentations that they can share with peers, families, and future employers or colleges. These tools have strengthened essential skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and attention to detail. Thanks to your generosity, our students now have the means to transform their ideas into tangible stories and presentations that highlight their learning and creativity. We are truly grateful for your support in helping our students see themselves as tomorrow's innovators and creators.","fullyFundedDate":1755743575416,"projectUrl":"project/stem-storytellers-editing-lab-for-tomor/9296762/","projectTitle":"STEM Storytellers: Editing Lab for Tomorrow’s Creators","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Yolanda M.
