Though I've left Hawthore to transition into teaching ELA, I will always be grateful for my time at Hawthorne, where I had the privilege of introducing these students to new forms of storytelling that blend text and visuals to spark their imaginations and build essential reading skills.\r\n\r\nGraphic novels like Dragon Hoops are perfect for developing both literacy and critical thinking. The combination of narrative and illustration helps students understand complex themes and character development, while also teaching them how to analyze visual symbolism and its role in storytelling. In my classroom, reading is an interactive experience where students engage in discussions that connect the text to their lives and foster a deeper appreciation for literature.\r\n\r\nI've seen incredible growth in students who might have been reluctant readers before. One student, in particular, finished Dragon Hoops in one sitting, something they had never done with a traditional book. This is just one example of how the books you've helped provide are making a real impact—turning reluctant readers into engaged learners.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your support. Your donation is helping to shape the future of these young readers, and I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful community.","fullyFundedDate":1744253550848,"projectUrl":"project/give-the-gift-of-reading-dragon-hoops-f/9192311/","projectTitle":"Give the Gift of Reading: Dragon Hoops for 7th Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hilker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1518899"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5261","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":616,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":14,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":87.7,"schoolId":5261,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hawthorne Scholastic Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hawthorne Scholastic Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/chicago-public-school-district-299/hawthorne-schoololastic-academy/5261"}
