They were so excited to open all the packages. They have always known that my office is a safe space for them to take a break and calm down, but having these resources helps the students really make the most of their break time. The resources help with emotional regulation and managing stress. As students build these skills, they become more successful in the classroom and have better relationships with their peers and teachers. \r\n\r\nWe've been able to use all of the items sent already! Our favorites have been:\r\n* The conversation starter dice - We've used these after peer mediations to end with positive interactions.\r\n* The Play-doh - Almost all students request to use this during their breaks to channel their energy into something creative & calming. \r\n* Koala light - Students use this to regulate their breathing if they're very angry or having a panic attack.\r\n* The weighted stuffed animals - The #1 favorite. We've had students, teachers, and parents holding them during meetings! We have a rule that they can't leave the office because students are trying to bring them to class with them. Our koala is named Owala and the sloth is named Mr. Snuggles. \r\n\r\nAt CMSA, we're always looking for ways to improve the student experience. We know that students need to be supported emotionally in order to succeed academically. My students and I really appreciate your kindness and generosity. \r\n\r\nThis year, I have decided to gamify my classroom to help increase student engagement and encourage positive behaviors. Students are able to earn skill points and experience points by reaching certain goals, exhibiting positive behaviors, or completing extra work to increase their understanding of the material. Throughout the quarter all the earned points are tallied, and students earn raffle tickets for chances to win the many prizes that you have funded. At the end of each quarter, we have a day of celebration where students are recognized for their hard work and positive behavior. It's at this celebration that students get excited and look forward to their rewards.\r\n\r\nAfter our first raffle, I had several students say \"Thank you! That was really fun!\" When they first learned that most of the prizes were snacks, their ears perked up and their eyes widened. I have found that students are paying attention to the levels that they and their peers are reaching, and are interested in finding ways to increase their \"scores\" so they can earn more chances to win!\r\n\r\nI hope to increase the amount of incentives in the future so that I am able to recognize more students for all of their achievements, big or small. Being able to reward students for things other than their grade can have a positive impact on classroom culture.
