I teach at an alternative school, where all of our students qualify for free lunch. However, we have to outsource our lunches from a neighboring district. Unfortunately, they aren't always the most appetizing by the time they are transported to our building. Many of my students opt to not eat lunch at all, and because of their economic situations are unable to pack their own lunch. \r\n\r\nIf you have ever tried to work or focus on a task while you are hungry, then you know how difficult that can be. The items from this project will stay in our lunchroom for students to \"Take What They Need.\" When my students saw this they were extremely thankful and appreciative! I have already noticed that students that normally don't eat lunch are eating. I selected these books for a variety of reasons. I work at an alternative school with at-risk youth. Most of my students have experienced traumatic events and struggle with mental health. The anxiety workbooks will be a great tool for them and myself. It has a lot of great ways to help my students when they are struggling, and will be the basis of a lot of social-emotional lessons in my classroom.\r\n\r\nThe graphic novelizations of \"The Odyssey\" and \"The Iliad\" will be a welcomed addition to our classroom library. My students love learning about mythology and graphic novels are an excellent way to get hesitant readers engaged in literacy. In past years I have taught Hero's Journey using Percy Jackson or Hadestown. These books will be a great option for students that want to keep reading about heroes and myths!\r\n\r\nFinally, I included a class set of the novel \"A Long Walk to Water\" because I try to select novels that feature main characters around their age. Some of the novels I use as a reflection of their own lives, but this novel will act a window into the world. The wobble stools, standing desks, chair bands, clipboards, and sensory cushions have transformed our classroom into a space where students feel comfortable, supported, and empowered to learn in ways that work best for them. Instead of being limited to traditional desks, students can choose how they learn, which immediately increases their sense of ownership and engagement.\r\n\r\nIn our alternative middle school classroom, many students struggle with focus, regulation, and staying seated for long periods of time. These flexible seating tools give them safe, appropriate ways to move while learning, which has led to noticeable improvements in attention, participation, and overall behavior. I've seen students who previously avoided work become more willing to try, simply because their bodies are no longer working against them.\r\n\r\nYour support goes far beyond furniture — it sends a message to students that they are worthy of investment and that their individual needs matter.
