These books allow us to extend our inquiry into the essential question that guides our unit: \"How do storytellers use primary sources?\" In this unit, we explore our essential question by analyzing the play Hamilton and our historical fiction novels. These books enable us to practice a wide range of English Language Arts skills, including comparing and contrasting, gathering evidence, collaborating, independent reading, and discussing. An example of a recent lesson that used these books is our first literature circle meeting. Students are grouped in \"literature circle groups\" of 4-6 students. They have collaborated to set reading goals and plan for their first meeting. Students individually prepared for their first meeting by reading their self-assigned chapters and completing their assigned discussion roles. They had their first meeting in which they shared their papers and discussed the assigned reading with their peers. \r\n\r\nStudents are engaging with reading these novels every day, both in the classroom and at home. Students are given silent sustained reading (SSR) time every day in class to read their novels and prepare for the weekly meetings. Our primary goal this year is to develop students' independent reading stamina and encourage them to read for enjoyment. \r\n\r\nSeveral of my students have expressed to me that they are enjoying reading their books. I have several students reading the novel, Rebel Spy, and they are very invested in the life of the main character. I also had girls who are reading the novel, My Dear Hamilton, who said it is \"so good!\" It is amazing to see students actually enjoying what they are reading. I look forward to their reactions as they continue reading and reach the end of the novels. Thank you again for providing these amazing novels for my students. They deserve the world, and it meant a great deal to me to be able to give them this experience.","fullyFundedDate":1753106821172,"projectUrl":"project/historical-fiction-is-lit/9372951/","projectTitle":"Historical Fiction is Lit!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Beeman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9259272"},{"teacherId":6863949,"projectId":7349507,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation, my students have enjoyed reading the books and being able to keep them for as long as they need without having to worry about Library due dates. \r\n\r\nI appreciate your support as most of my students don't enjoy reading and having a graphic novel has allowed them to read a classic along with being able to read it.
