Your gift didn't just add books to a shelf; it opened up vibrant new worlds of language, culture, and learning for my classroom. These new texts are foundational to building bilingual literacy, and we're already seeing their positive effects. Through these stories, students are developing crucial skills: they are making cross-linguistic connections by recognizing shared vocabulary and narrative structures in both languages. Furthermore, they are engaging in cultural competence as they read stories that reflect both their own backgrounds and the backgrounds of their peers, validating their home languages while expanding their understanding of the world. Seeing students proudly pick up a book and switch seamlessly between English and Spanish as they read is the most powerful measure of success.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a dynamic, collaborative, and joyful experience. Both our bilingual and monolingual students read these books every day, integrating them into our daily learning routine. They show so much respect and care for the books because they know they are a special gift from kind, anonymous supporters who believe in their success. We engage with these books through shared reading, where we analyze the beautiful illustrations and discuss the author's message together, and through paired reading, where students work with a partner to navigate the dual text. This method creates an environment of shared discovery, allowing students to tutor and learn from one another—a natural way to build confidence and fluency. We have seen a particularly enthusiastic response from students who are in the early stages of learning their second language. For example, one student who was often hesitant to speak in class is now glowing as she points out words she recognizes in both Spanish and English, using the bilingual text as a bridge to deeper understanding. She, along with many others, is building a strong, positive identity as a confident bilingual reader, all thanks to your support. Thank you again for investing in our students' potential. Your generosity is directly shaping a classroom where language diversity is not just accepted, but actively celebrated and used as a tool for academic success.","fullyFundedDate":1755107238678,"projectUrl":"project/el-supportive-leisure-reading/9397061/","projectTitle":"EL Supportive Leisure Reading!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10050224_orig.jpg?crop=4000,4000,x0,y1000&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749075980027","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10050224"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_52452","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":459,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":34,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":60,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"13.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":60.4,"schoolId":52452,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Van Buren Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Van Buren Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/idaho/caldwell-school-district/van-buren-elementary-school/52452"}
