My students have grown used to working on vertical surfaces to learn new skills in math. They were very excited to see the new white boards and its clean surface. The whiteboards provided them more space to write on. With the new white boards, I can have more groups with less students in each group which will allow for more engagement from the students. Since the whiteboards are mobile, students are not limited to the perimeter of the classroom (walls and windows). I can move the whiteboards anywhere in the classroom and work with a small group of students that may be struggling with the content. The materials given will definitely help me to continue to explore BTC concepts and work in small groups with my students. As they played, they practiced speaking English by explaining their moves, asking questions, and encouraging their classmates. \r\n(That was awesome!) It was wonderful to hear students using phrases like \"Your turn,\" \"How did you guess that?\" \"I think you will win,\" and \"Good game!\" For many of my students who are still developing confidence in English, the games created a natural and low-pressure way to communicate with their peers.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their faces lit up with excitement. Many of them immediately asked if they could start playing. Some students who are usually quiet or shy became much more engaged. The volleyballs, in particular, brought a lot of joy during recess and outdoor activities. Students quickly formed teams and practiced together, laughing and cheering each other on. It was heartwarming to see them building friendships and feeling more comfortable with one another. In addition, we used the volleyball to practice for the schoolwide event called \" Volleyball for Heart\". It is an annual school event here at my school where ALL students have the chance to play volleyball and challenge another team or grade level. This year, my students are pretty confident that they will make it to the championship round since they have had a lot of practice sessions. Thanks for your generous donation!\r\n\r\nThese resources are also helping us create a stronger sense of belonging. Many ESL students can sometimes feel isolated, but games and sports give them opportunities to connect with classmates beyond language barriers. Through play, they are learning teamwork, communication, and confidence.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we will continue to use these materials to support both social-emotional and academic learning. During upcoming lessons, students will participate in cooperative group activities where they practice conversational English while playing strategy games. I also plan to incorporate reflection activities where students talk or write about the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and communication skills they practiced during the games.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped us create a classroom where students feel welcomed, included, and excited to participate. Your support has officially turned my students into active citizen scientists and stewards of Hawai'i's unique biodiversity.\r\n\r\nOur Resources in Action\r\nWe are currently using the bee habitat and specimens to conduct a deep-dive investigation into our bees and production of bees. A standout moment occurred in January when we set up our observation station/ Hive box. One student, while looking at a specimen, realized just how small bees really are. They turned to their partner and said, \"If we don't protect their habitat, this whole part of our island's story disappears.\" It was a profound moment of empathy and scientific realization that connected perfectly back to our goal of fostering aloha 'āina.\r\n\r\nThe First Reaction\r\nWhen the worm farm and vibrant scientific markers arrived, the students were ecstatic. They were particularly fascinated by the vermicomposting kit—there were plenty of \"oohs\" and \"eeeks\" that quickly turned into curiosity. Seeing the worms in person made the concept of a \"no-waste cycle\" tangible. They immediately began discussing which scraps from their lunch could go back into the earth to feed our garden, echoing the sustainable cycles of our kūpuna.\r\n\r\nWhat's Next for Our Citizen Scientists\r\nNow that our foundation is set, our next step is to begin detailed scientific journaling. Using the new markers, students are creating botanical and entomological illustrations that document the relationship between the bees and native plants. We are also starting our weekly \"Waste Audit,\" where students will track how much food waste we divert from the landfill and transform into nutrient-rich compost.\r\n\r\nBy contributing to this project, you haven't just bought supplies; you've provided the tools for these children to see themselves as informed guardians of our islands.\r\n\r\nWith much aloha and gratitude,","fullyFundedDate":1763415913156,"projectUrl":"project/aloha-ina-cultivating-conservation-wi/9774235/","projectTitle":"Aloha ‘Āina: Cultivating Conservation with a Living Ecosystem","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Watarai","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7939487"},{"teacherId":9375426,"projectId":9392945,"letterContent":"The individual student whiteboards have been a game changer in my classroom. They are eager to experiment with recording techniques, add voiceovers to videos, and collaborate on audio projects. Many have shared that using real equipment makes them feel like \"real creators,\" which has increased both motivation and pride in their work.\r\nSeveral students who are typically quieter in class have especially connected with this technology. Recording allows them to rehearse, refine, and share ideas in a supportive way, building confidence over time. One student who is often hesitant to speak aloud eagerly volunteered to narrate a group project once he could record and re-record until satisfied.
