Reading The One and Only Ivan together has opened the door to so many meaningful lessons, both academic and personal. Through this text, students are learning to identify figurative language, explore vocabulary in context, and analyze theme and character development. We've had powerful discussions about the treatment of animals, the importance of friendship, and standing up for what's right. The poetic prose structure of the book has also introduced students to a unique storytelling style that's helping them see how authors use language creatively to express emotion and build connection.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a shared experience. We read together as a class, in small groups, and independently, using the novel as a springboard for conversation, writing, and deeper thinking. One student who usually struggles to stay focused during reading time now rushes to class, excited to read what happens next in Ivan's story. Another student, who rarely spoke up during discussions, has started sharing thoughtful insights about the characters' motivations and the story's message.
