During our Project-Based Learning unit on Greek mythology, students researched a mythological figure of their choice, analyzed important traits and themes, and wrote an informative piece to teach others about their character.\r\n\r\nThe art materials allowed students to extend their learning beyond paper and pencil. Each student designed and painted a canvas that visually represented their chosen Greek figure and key elements of the myth. One unforgettable moment was watching students carefully sketch their ideas before painting, discussing symbolism with peers, and revising both their artwork and writing to make sure it accurately reflected their research. They were thinking deeply and creating with purpose.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the excitement was immediate. There were gasps, huge smiles, and so many questions. Several students shared that they had never painted on a real canvas before. They handled the supplies with pride and responsibility, knowing these materials were provided because someone believed in them.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue applying these skills in our upcoming writing unit, where they will once again move through the full writing process — planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We will also continue integrating art as a way to deepen comprehension and strengthen critical thinking across subjects.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students are not just learning — they are creating, presenting, and growing in confidence every single day. Teachers, Educational Aides and our counselors have brought students to the Aloha Mediation Room to give students in need the opportunity to resolve issues in a peaceful manner with the help of their peers. They practice new calming techniques, and help each other to be ready to return to class with confidence and resolution. The best result is that students themselves are beginning to recognize when they need a moment to regroup in the Aloha Mediation Room. \r\n\r\nThe initial reaction to the Aloha Mediation Room was incredible! The student peer mentors were excited to explore their new digs and test out the comfy seating and the tools for calming. Now when small disagreements happen in class or on the playground, these peer mediators are equipped to help their fellow students resolve issues and return to class with greater compassion and empathy. \r\n\r\nNext, we would love to expand this campus practice. Having students trained to help other students resolve their peer issues is far more effective than simply referring them to the office. Students in crisis see that other students, their friends and classmates, are capable of helping to resolve smaller issues without referrals, without the stigma of being sent to the principal or vice principalʻs office. The result is a greater sense of peace, safety and calm on campus. We canʻt wait to do more!
