The students were thrilled to find their own sturdy pencil boxes waiting for them, each filled with vibrant markers and highlighters that make their reading lessons come alive. In our science and art blocks, the new modeling clay has become a favorite tool, allowing these young thinkers to build, create, and explore in three dimensions.\r\n\r\nPerhaps most touching is the impact of the new class incentive prizes. These small rewards have fostered a wonderful spirit of encouragement and hard work within our classroom community. The different sized pencils give students an opportunity to pick the one just right for them for the activity. We will do as much of the handwriting books as possible this year, then the books and pencils will go home with students so they can continue to practice their penmanship over the summer. We also love to do handwriting work on white boards with dry erase markers that are not running out. We use our white boards and dry erase markers daily in Math Workshop. At the end of the 1st semester, many of my students sat in the bean bag chairs, felt the soft carpet, and practiced different techniques to get ready for daily activities. These items will be used everyday of the school year\r\n With the blue carpet, blue bean bags, and fish tower, I created a peaceful beach scene. Selfishly, I love ocean themes and often visualize being at the beach when I feel overwhelmed or anxious. I often model how to control my breathing, use visualization tactics, and positive self talk to overcome minor setbacks with my students. \r\nI allowed students to sit in the calm area to retake tests without having the distraction of their classmates, which resulted in improved I-Ready Assessment scores. A few second grade boys used the calm area to get caught up on missed math assignments. \r\nSome Kindergarteners used puppets in a social story about being at a \"pool party\" on the blue carpet. I also had school adults sit in the area to calm their bodies after a stressful day.\r\nThank you for your continued support with the Donorschoose program.
