The new Light Blox kits were a need as we had very few working in our previous sets. This allowed for students to use them in smaller groups on all of our topics from light wave behavior to lenses to how we see color. The lasers allowed me to demonstrate the light wave behavior with gummy bears while students used small LEDs. The electroscope was a great addition to helping students understand conduction versus induction of charges. That is a tough concept that can best be understood by seeing the leaves move and making those connections to charges.\r\nThe microscope was great for really thinking about visible light and what it includes as well as thinking about how we see. This project has made a HUGE impact on the 8th graders at WCMS. \r\nThe MakeyMakey is a hit with 8th graders. One student used the MakeyMakey as his presentation for STEM Club and many students were able to use it and gain a new appreciation for how circuits are a part of their daily lives. \r\nOur cow eye dissection will be so much easier by using plates and new dissection scissors. Blowing up balloons can be chaotic in a middle school classroom, so this will save our breath and our energy for the science and not the balloons. The sheet protectors allow for us to share printed colored images without ruining the pages and reuse for years to come. The dry erase markers help for our dry erase board work for review and practice with physics formulas and more. Our previous numbered wall clock broke, so this one was a great replacement so we have both analog time (again) to go with our digital clock. There are times where analog is required (testing). \r\nThe colored pencils were a replacement for the bubble machine. The clock and magnets have helped with day to day activities. The magnets have also been a great use for hanging science demonstrations from the ceiling which makes them more visible to students. The digital clock is perfectly visible from all spots in the room and students are able to use it to help pace themselves when working.\r\nThe engine model made the BIGGEST impact. When learning about energy transformations, the model arrived. One of my students took the leadership role and worked any free time he had to build the engine and had other students help him. All students who worked to build the model signed it and they are very proud of their work that will benefit all science classes for years to come.
