This technology is doing something remarkable — it is turning complex scientific concepts into hands-on learning \r\n\r\nInstead of simply viewing diagrams in a textbook, students now design and print detailed 3D models of viruses and bacteria. They create models of influenza viruses, bacteriophages, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria to better understand how structure relates to function. When students can physically hold a model of a virus and see its spike proteins, they better understand how it attaches to human cells and triggers immune responses. When they build models of bacterial cell walls, they can clearly see why some antibiotics work and why some bacteria develop resistance. This hands-on experience transforms abstract concepts like immunity and antibiotic resistance into tangible, memorable lessons. Students aren't just memorizing vocabulary — they are thinking like biomedical researchers.\r\n\r\nBeyond microbiology, students are also designing and printing small-scale aquaponics system models. These systems demonstrate how fish and plants work together in a sustainable, closed-loop food system. Students learn about nutrient cycling, ecosystems, and sustainable agriculture — all while applying engineering and design principles.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students is seeing their ideas come to life. They design their own virus models to show how antibodies attach. They modify bacterial models to demonstrate how resistance genes spread. They build aquaponics prototypes and then imagine how those systems could support sustainable restaurant menus featuring locally grown herbs, greens, and fish.\r\n\r\nSuddenly, science is not just something they study — it's something they create.\r\nMany students say this is the first time school feels connected to real-world challenges like public health, food sustainability, and environmental stewardship.\r\n\r\nThis technology is reaching students in powerful ways:\r\n\r\n* Hands-on learners who struggled with textbook diagrams are now leading design projects.\r\n* Students interested in healthcare are diving deeper into research on emerging antibiotic-resistant bacteria.\r\n* Future engineers are refining aquaponics systems and proposing sustainable restaurant concepts.\r\n* Students who previously lacked confidence are discovering that persistence, creativity, and iteration lead to success.\r\n\r\nThe impact goes far beyond science content. Students are building problem-solving skills, resilience, collaboration, and confidence.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, our classrooms are becoming innovation labs — places where students tackle real-world problems with creativity and purpose.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers, healthcare professionals, and sustainability leaders.","fullyFundedDate":1763604199825,"projectUrl":"project/3d-printing-steam-projects-to-solve-glob/9530018/","projectTitle":"3D Printing Steam Projects to Solve Global Problems","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Glover","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7062463_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1694373658574","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7062463"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50479","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":640,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":66,"percentWhite":17,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":37.5,"schoolId":50479,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about A.R.
