They loved the different colored pencil cases and were especially happy to receive new dry erase markers with erasers so they could use their dry erase boards again. Prior to the supplies arriving, many of their markers were dried out or damaged, and students had been limited to using paper and pencil for over a month. These resources have made a meaningful impact on both engagement and learning, and we are truly grateful for the support.\r\n\r\nTo help my students truly understand mathematics, we regularly engage in hands-on learning activities. Since receiving the donated items, we have been able to create meaningful and visually engaging work that clearly demonstrates student learning. Many of my scholars come to school without the essential materials needed to succeed, so each student was provided with a pencil case to store their pencils and dry erase markers. This ensures they have the basic necessities to participate fully in class assignments. Scissors, glue sticks, and construction paper are used for cut-and-paste activities at least once per week. Organization is also critical, as a teacher cannot effectively teach in a cluttered environment. The desk organizer has made a significant difference in how I store small items such as paper clips, thumbtacks, staples, and stickers, which are used to encourage scholars to keep trying their best.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we frequently use think-pair-share strategies, and students enjoy using the colored dry erase markers when working with fractions because they can color the parts of a whole. This has been especially helpful when multiplying and dividing fractions. We also post success criteria and learning targets for each lesson; however, their location can be difficult for students to reach. The pointers allow students to touch each word as the class follows along together. During the winter season, runny noses are common, and having Kleenex readily available prevents students from frequently leaving the classroom, allowing them to remain engaged in instruction. Disinfecting wipes have also been essential in helping reduce germs in the classroom. Once activities are completed, students use index cards to explain how they arrived at their answers or what they learned. I respond on the same card with feedback, suggestions for improvement, or questions to prompt higher-order thinking. Most recently, students completed a fraction activity where they solved problems, matched them with diagrams, and connected them to written statements demonstrating the success criteria. Many of the donated materials were used in this project.","fullyFundedDate":1760657423318,"projectUrl":"project/tools-for-success-equipping-students-wi/9764372/","projectTitle":"Tools for Success: Equipping Students With Everyday Essentials","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Haughton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10088547_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758880569815","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10088547"},{"teacherId":9718043,"projectId":9149551,"letterContent":"In our 4th grade math classroom, flexible seating, paper, pencils, Lysol, and cleaning wipes have really enhanced the learning experience. During our recent project on understanding multiplication and division word problems, students used the flexible seating options to form small collaborative groups, choosing spots where they could comfortably discuss and solve problems together. They worked on paper to draw models and write out their solutions, using pencils to make changes and corrections easily. After each group session, students took responsibility for wiping down their tables and shared materials using Lysol and cleaning wipes, which helped keep our space safe and clean.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the flexible seating and new supplies, they were excited and curious. Many of them immediately tested out the different chairs and cushions, expressing how much more comfortable and fun learning felt. The availability of pencils and fresh paper also encouraged them to dive right into problem-solving without hesitation, and they quickly embraced the routine of cleaning their spaces, showing maturity and care for their classroom environment.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps involve applying these problem-solving skills to multi-step word problems and beginning to explore basic fractions. Students will continue using flexible seating during partner and group work to support collaboration and communication. We'll also integrate math journals where students will record their strategies and reflections, reinforcing both their conceptual understanding and their responsibility for maintaining a clean, organized workspace with the supplies provided.","fullyFundedDate":1746722740980,"projectUrl":"project/4th-grade-flexible-seating/9149551/","projectTitle":"4th Grade Flexible Seating","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Meadows-Grayson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9718043"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50269","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":487,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":71,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":23,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":67.1,"schoolId":50269,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/muscogee-county-school-district/martin-luther-king-junior-elementary-school/50269"}
