Because of your generosity, my 24 fifth graders now have access to a wide variety of high-interest books that are already making a difference in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThese new books are helping my students grow as readers in meaningful ways. Through series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Wings of Fire, students are strengthening skills such as understanding characters, identifying themes, and making inferences as they read. The graphic novels, including Wings of Fire, I Survived, Magic Tree House, and Enola Holmes, have been especially helpful for building vocabulary and supporting comprehension by pairing strong visuals with rich text. Many of these books also introduce history and real-world topics in engaging and accessible ways for fifth graders.\r\n\r\nReading time in our classroom is now something students truly look forward to. Students read independently, talk excitedly about what they are reading, and recommend books to one another. Many have already found their favorite series, with Wings of Fire graphic novels, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I Survived, and the Magic Tree House graphic novels being among the most popular. It is common to see students eagerly waiting for a turn with a book or asking if they can take it home to keep reading.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant readers have been especially impacted by these new books. Graphic novels have helped some students gain confidence, while others are challenging themselves with longer chapter books for the first time. Seeing students proudly share their favorite stories and begin to see themselves as readers has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped create a welcoming and engaging reading environment where every child can find a book that sparks their interest. The new picture books have helped my students explore big science ideas, such as erosion, weathering, and how matter changes. Books such as Cracking Up: A Story About Erosion and Matter: Physical Science for Kids have made complex concepts easy to understand and fun to discuss. The Most Magnificent Thing quickly became a class favorite, inspiring my students to think like engineers and problem solvers as they work through challenges with creativity and perseverance.\r\n\r\nWe've just started reading our books about electricity, and my students are full of questions about how circuits work and where energy comes from. Their excitement during science and reading time has grown so much. My students are absolutely thrilled each time a new issue of the magazine arrives. They can't wait to see what the week's topics will be and often flip straight to the articles that grab their attention first. Having Time for Kids in our classroom has made reading time something they truly look forward to. The magazines have turned our reading block into a space for exploration, curiosity, and meaningful discussion as students connect what they're reading to the world around them.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the articles to practice close reading skills, identify main ideas, and build vocabulary, but what I love most is seeing my students make real-world connections. Recently, we read an article about a powerful earthquake, which tied perfectly into our science unit on constructive and destructive forces. The kids were fascinated to see how what we'd studied in class was happening in real life. They asked great questions, made connections to our lessons, and were eager to learn more about how Earth's surface changes over time. It was one of those moments where reading, science, and curiosity all came together naturally.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped my students see that reading isn't just about stories. It's about understanding the world and finding their place in it. Because of your support, my fifth graders are learning to think critically, discuss respectfully, and stay curious about the world around them. My students were so excited when the boxes arrived and could hardly wait to see what was inside. We unpacked fraction tiles, pattern blocks, linking cubes, color tiles, dice, and even playing cards, and it instantly felt like Christmas morning in our classroom. These new materials have completely changed the way my students approach math.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the fraction tiles and pattern blocks during lessons on fractions and geometry, and it's been amazing to watch the \"aha\" moments happen when students can actually see and touch what they're learning. The dice and playing cards have quickly become favorites, and students use them almost daily for games like Flip and Plot Coordinate Grids, as well as various multiplication and division challenges. These games have brought a great deal of energy and engagement to our math block, and I've noticed students helping and encouraging each other in ways that make learning both enjoyable and meaningful.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has provided my students with the hands-on tools they need to build confidence and truly understand math concepts. My 5th graders were so excited when they saw the construction paper. They couldn't wait to get started on our hands-on activities, like Radial Symmetry with Squares and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) Graphic Organizers in their science notebooks. It was wonderful to see them using their creativity and critical thinking together to explore math, science, and art in fun new ways.\r\n\r\nIn our Radial Symmetry with Squares project, students used construction paper to create raised-relief sculptures while exploring patterns, symmetry, and the relationships between squares and triangles. As they folded, cut, and layered the paper, they were able to see physical changes happening, which made abstract concepts more concrete. This hands-on approach helped students connect math and art in a meaningful way, giving them a chance to think critically, experiment, and express their understanding visually. They were fully engaged the entire time, collaborating with peers, trying new ideas, and celebrating their creative successes.\r\n\r\nThe construction paper will also help with upcoming projects, like building fraction kits and constructing plant and animal cell models. These materials give my students the chance to organize their ideas, think critically, and show what they've learned in hands-on ways. Your support has made a huge difference in our classroom.
